Subject: Travelling into South Cyprus and out from North Cyprus
Posted: Wed Jul 23, 2008 2:16 am (GMT 3)
:

Hi folks
Can anyone help me out. I am trying to plan a trip from New Zealand and am looking at entering Larnaca from Jordan by air, and then want to take the ferry from North Cyprus to Turkey. Only plan on spending about 1 week in Cyprus. I have read on one site that if I enter via the South I can't leave via the North. Is there any truth in this and if so is there any way around it?
The desperate situation in Gaza is not a natural disaster, such as a hurricane or an earthquake. This disaster is man-made, born of Israel's desire to make Gazans as miserable, and therefore submissive, as possible. The rest of the world does not have to ignore this situation, but many of those who have used the phrase "never again," fall silent when a new atrocity against Palestinians is under way.

This August, a group of 40 international human rights activists from 15 countries, including Palestinians and Israelis, will attempt to sail directly from the island of Cyprus into the besieged Palestinian territory of Gaza. I will participate as the ship's doctor. Two ships, provided by an organization called the Free Gaza Movement, will challenge Israel's policy of imprisoning 1.4 million Palestinians within the Gaza Strip.

The ship pumped 40,000 cubic metres of water into the ground rather than a reservoir because delays had made the water unsuitable for consumption.

Cypriot Agriculture Minister Michalis Polynikis denied the water would go to waste, saying it was important to enrich the water table.

Water shortages are not a new phenomenon that has emerged due to the increase in climatological changes worldwide. The island has suffered regularly from droughts and water shortages, forcing its various occupants to find the most efficient ways to collect, store and convey water.

Some 1700 years ago, for example, the island had to be evacuated after nearly two decades without rainfall. Based on historical evidence, around 306 AD Cyprus was so badly affected by lack of water that the island was almost deserted. It was only when the drought finally ended that people were transported back to the country from the island of Tylos.

Yeah I'm fine. I spent 3 months in Cyprus but I realized that I'm not ready to move back yet and I kept thinking about my life and work back in the US etc. So I decided to return back. I know 3 months is not a long time period to adjust somewhere but due to my visa etc. I had to either forget the US completely or move back.

A lesson for us all!

Jack wakes up with a huge hangover after attending his company's Christmas Party. Jack is not normally a drinker, but the drinks didn't taste like alcohol at all. He didn't even remember how he got home from the party.

As bad as he was feeling, he wondered if he did something wrong. Jack had to force himself to open his eyes, and the first thing
he sees is a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table.

And, next to them, a single red rose! Jack sits up and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean. So is the rest of the house.

He takes the aspirins, cringes when he sees a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror. Then he notices a note hanging on the corner of the mirror written in red with little hearts on it and a kiss mark from his wife in lipstick: 'Honey, breakfast is in the oven, I left early to get groceries to make you your favourite dinner tonight. I love you, darling! Love, Jillian'

He stumbles to the kitchen and sure enough, there is hot breakfast, steaming hot coffee and the morning newspaper. His teenage son is also at the table eating.

Jack asks, 'Son, what happened last night?'

'Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and out of your mind. You fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then you puked in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door.'

Confused, he asked his son, 'So, why is everything in such perfect order and so clean? I have a rose, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me??'

His son replies, 'Oh THAT! ... ...............
Mum dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your trousers off, you screamed, 'Leave me alone, I'm married!!'

Broken Coffee Table £239.99
Hot Breakfast £4.20
Two Aspirins £.38
Saying the right thing, at the right time. PRICELESS

Except on this day, soldiers weren’t fighting Islamist militias or warlords. They were combating a mob of tens of thousands rioting over soaring food prices.

Quote:

This year, Somalia claims the unenviable distinction of being the state most at risk of failure. In many ways, Somalia has failed already, as the unpopular transitional government lacks control of the streets of Mogadishu—much less the rest of the country. The loose coalition of Islamic clerics and militia leaders that captured the capital in 2006 was routed in the early weeks of 2007 with the help of Ethiopian troops, who have since stayed on to battle the remnants of the Islamist insurgency. The fighting has yet to produce anything resembling a victor; if anything, the country’s clan chaos continues unabated in the unruly streets, while pirates stalk the waters offshore. What the fighting has successfully produced is a refugee nightmare, with some 700,000 people fleeing Mogadishu last year.

Somalia’s disorder is generally eclipsed by the humanitarian disaster in Darfur, a situation notable for its remarkable lack of progress. The spillover effects of this troubled region continue to pull Sudan and its neighbors closer to the brink, with worsening refugee crises around the region and escalating skirmishes between rebels backed by the governments in Chad and Sudan. All told, sub-Saharan Africa is home to seven of this year’s 10 most vulnerable states, with four of them in the top five. Zimbabwe’s slide in this year’s index reflects the country’s out-of-control inflation, 80 percent unemployment, and the fact that thousands flee to neighboring Botswana and South Africa every week. The country’s fortunes, further spoiled by this year’s election dispute, are likely to continue to suffer before Zimbabweans can expect a respite.

Quote:

Of course, the countries appearing among the 60 weakest states are not always there because of unforeseen disasters. Take Israel, which has slid in the rankings each year and now makes its first appearance in the top 60. Israel’s inability to fully integrate its Arab minority, its sharp economic disparities, and the increased factionalization of its political leaders did not arise overnight. And though Israel owes much of its ranking to conditions in the West Bank, the continued hardships in the territories cannot be divorced from the stability of Israel itself. It shows that the fates of neighbors can be just as critical to the fortunes of otherwise stable states. And that is a reality that should shock no one.

Quote:

Bangladesh took this year’s hardest fall, set off in part by postponed elections, a feuding, deadlocked government, and the imposition of emergency rule that has dragged on for more than 18 months. These political setbacks were followed by greater economic hardships after a devastating cyclone in November flooded large swaths of cropland and left 1.5 million people homeless. In nearby Pakistan, also one of this year’s worst performers, a beleaguered President Pervez Musharraf sparked waves of violent protests when he dismissed the head of the Supreme Court and declared martial law. In a tragic close to the year, the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto left many wondering about the future prospects of this fragile, nuclear-armed state.

Ironically, Bangladesh and Pakistan are the world’s top two contributors of U.N. peacekeepers, often deploying troops to the very countries enjoying this year’s biggest advances. Pakistanis constitute the largest national U.N. contingent operating in Liberia. More than 9,000 Bangladeshi troops wear U.N. blue helmets around the world, a third of them in the Ivory Coast. It is a reminder that while helping to maintain peace abroad might be an attractive national project, keeping the peace at home can be even more elusive.

Quote:

Record oil prices have failed to improve the poor fortunes of the world’s most vulnerable states.

Last year, ExxonMobil’s revenues—$404 billion—exceeded the GDPs of more than 160 countries. It was, quite simply, a banner year for oil companies, with a string of record-breaking profits as the price of oil nearly doubled. But if it was a phenomenal time to be an oil executive, it was hardly the best moment to be the citizen of an oil-producing country. The incredible fortunes of the oil market rarely translate into social fortunes on the ground.

Quote:

And, according to the World Bank, which last year deemed the West Bank “a shattered economic space,” GDP per capita has plunged 40 percent since 2000. More than half the population lives below the poverty line.

Christofias tight-lipped over Downer’s appointment
By Alexia Saoulli

UN Secretary-general special adviser on the Cyprus problem, Alexander Downer, has an auxiliary role to play in the Cyprus issue, President Demetris Christofias said yesterday.

Commenting on Downer’s appointment, which was announced on Friday, at Larnaca airport before his departure for Paris where he will participate at the EU summit for the Mediterranean, Christofias said that the former Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs would be judged by his actions.

He said Secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon’s intentions were well known, and added that each and every one “will be judged by his action and his productivity”.

Furthermore Christofias expressed the belief that the UN and its officials could play a positive role in the joint efforts towards a Cyprus settlement based on the Security Council resolutions.

The president added that the Greek Cypriot side would evaluate the progress or work being done by the technical committees and working groups ahead of his July 25 meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. During the meeting he would express the Greek Cypriot side’s estimation and opinion on the matter, he added.

This month’s meeting is the fourth since Christofias’ election in February. It is a review of the progress achieved at discussions between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot experts on various aspects of the Cyprus question, including territory, governance, the economy and property. The leaders will decide whether direct negotiations between them can begin.

Probe team visits collapsed THOK roof
By Leo Leonidou

THE PROBE into the collapse of the roof of the Nicosia Municipal Theatre officially began this week, with the team carrying out their initial site inspections.

The aim is to find out what exactly happened on June 11, after most of the seating area was crushed, only three years after a €5.5 million renovation project.

Thankfully the theatre was closed at the time, with the venue booked to host hundreds of schoolchildren for an end-of-year performance 24 hours later.

On June 18, the Cabinet appointed a three-man investigative committee to look into the incident. Heading the committee is Giorgos Ioannides, a Professor in the School of Civil Engineering at the National Metsovio Polytechnic in Greece. Committee members include civil engineers Costas Meletiou and Panicos Papadopoulos.

Yesterday, the team climbed on a special crane to inspect the top of the building, with evidence taken away from the scene.

“Our work has begun and on Thursday afternoon we visited the site for the first time before undertaking an aerial inspection on Friday,” said Ioannides.

The trio have already met with Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou, during which the exact work that will take place was discussed.

“The committee will have all the powers in accordance with the law to undertake the investigation of the causes that led to the collapse of the Nicosia Municipal Theatre roof and any possible negligence or responsibility,” Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said at the time the committee was appointed.

He added that President Demetris Christofias had given clear instructions that the committee’s report be submitted to the Education Ministry as soon as possible.

“The President of the Republic has given clear instructions and orders that responsibility is apportioned where it is due and of course for those who are guilty to be punished… the intention is for the investigation to be concluded as soon as possible,” Stefanou said.

ETEK Technical Chamber President Christos Efthivoulou has said that the Chamber, “is interested in a thorough investigation so we can scientifically prove what led to the roof’s collapse.”

According to Ioannides, “the investigation is expected to run for the next six months due to the huge workload involved and we will make every attempt to stick to this timeframe.”

He added that special care will be taken while working on the site as it may not be structurally sound.”

The police have also interviewed theatre employees, technicians and members of the renovation team as part of the enquiry.
Dear Sir,

I read with great dismay that the imported Greek water is still sitting in tankers off the coast of Cyprus.

Could the government now clarify what action they are taking to prevent this water from turning bad?

Currently we are only online but are working with the government and relevant licensing bodies to get onto FM as soon as possible.

Thats where you can help...

We want to know what you think... the more that listen and love us, the quicker we can get national FM status from the government.
The main part of this report focuses on the village of Jayyus, most of whose productive land is cut off in the closed area. Reduced opportunity for cultivation has led to the dismantling of greenhouses, and a change to lower-maintenance but lower-yield crops. As a result, there is increased unemployment, evidence of displacement especially among young men, and the transformation of a community which formerly exported food to a recipient of food aid. The concern is that if the land to the west of the Barrier in the rest of the West Bank is declared closed by military order, and the permit and gate regime is instituted, the predicament of Jayyus, Qalqiliya and Salfit will be replicated with devastating consequences for Palestinian livelihoods

Thirsty Cyprus left three metres short of water supplies
9 hours ago

NICOSIA (AFP) — A 3.5-metre (10-foot) miscalculation with the final section of an undersea pipeline is depriving Cyprus of badly-needed water supplies shipped over from Greece.

Greek Cypriots on Monday were still awaiting the precious cargo to reach shore, a week after it arrived off Cyprus.

The specially-built 1,320-metre undersea pipeline falls 3.5 metres short of a land pipe which is to channel the water to a distribution centre, said the shipping company involved in the project.

The connecting pipe from the ship is not long enough after experts apparently miscalculated the length.

A red-faced Agriculture Minister Michalis Polynikis told state radio of his "surprise" over the latest snag because up until Sunday lunchtime he was confident water would be offloaded.

The drought-parched island is in desperate need of additional water supplies from Greece to replenish dwindling reserves, but it now has to wait until the problem is fixed.

A Cypriot shipping firm is to ferry a total of eight million cubic metres (280 million cubic feet) of water from Greece to help ease the holiday island's water crisis.

The entire deal will cost the government more than 40 million euros (62 million dollars) but still only meets half the island's estimated shortfall of 16 million cubic metres by the end of this year.

The first ship -- carrying 50,000 cubic metres -- has been anchored off the southern port city of Limassol since June 30. A second tanker will not depart from Greece until the initial consignment is unloaded.

Six tankers are involved in ferrying the water to Cyprus, with the transfer -- totalling 200 shipments -- expected to be completed by November.

Because of a two-year drought, most households on the eastern Mediterranean island have had water supplies reduced by a third to try to tackle the shortage.

The government is also looking to draw up a long-term strategy, including more desalination plants and increased output from the two existing ones.

Reservoirs in the government-controlled southern part of divided Cyprus are now at just 6.8 percent of capacity, or 18,730 million cubic metres, a third of the level of the same time last year.

Mass detentions shock Turkey
Tensions rise again as 21 public figures detained overnight for Ergenekon operation

On Tuesday Turkish police detained a total of 21 people, including two retired high-ranking generals, a journalist and a chamber of commerce chairman, who were believed to be members of a state-backed gang.
The former military police chief, General Sener Eruygur and former army number two, General Hursit Tolon as well as Mustafa Balbay, bureau chief of the secularist daily Cumhuriyet, were taken into custody in Ankara in the latest twist in investigations that began last year.
Operation Ergenekon, which started last year, had geared up since the closure case against the AKP was filed and accuses retired commanders, journalists and politicians with suspected links to an illegal gang which was accused of paving the way to a military coup. The arrested men allegedly planned to assassinate public intellectuals, Kurdish politicians, even target military personnel, as part of a campaign to destabilise Turkish society and force military intervention. They are also accused of a spate of high-profile killings and a plot to murder the Nobel Prize-winning author Orhan Pamuk.

Other names detained
Police also searched the homes of Cumhuriyet employees. Nearly half of those detained were members of the Kemalist Thought Association (ADD), a secularist NGO founded in 1989 and led by detained General Eruygur, to promote the principles of Turkey's founder. Retired colonel Atilla Ugur and Osman Gurbuz were also taken into custody by police in the southern province of Antalya, TV channels reported. Former AKP deputy, Turhan Comez, who was an opponent of Erdogan are sought by police. Retired Brigadier General Levent Ersoz was also detained. Aygun, on arrival at his office under police escort where a search was carried out, told reporters that he has been accused for his devotion to Ataturk and the Turkish Republic. Editor-in-chief of daily ‘Halka ve Olaylara Tercuman’, Ufuk Buyukcelebi, was also detained in Istanbul. Police searched Buyukcelebi's office at the daily's headquarters and seized some documents.

Public and international reaction
Hundreds of people gathered in front of Cumhuriyet's offices in Istanbul to protest against the detentions. The paper opposes Turkey's ruling Islamist-leaning AKP party. Small anti-government demonstrations broke out in Istanbul, Izmir, Denizli and Bodrum, Turkish media reported.
"I'm watching these events unfold with great concern given Turkey's history of military interventions. There is clearly a fight between two power groups and no one is yet willing to back down," said a senior EU diplomat, according to Reuters, and he declined to be named.
"The raids yesterday were reminiscent of previous coups and are not acceptable," Rifat Hisarciklioglu, the influential chairman of the Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodities Exchanges, said in a speech at the Ankara Chamber of Commerce.
Turkey's second most powerful military commander called for calm on Wednesday. “Turkey is passing through difficult days. We all have to be acting with more common sense, more carefully and more responsibly,” land forces commander General Ilker Basbug, who is due to take charge of the military in August, told reporters.

Charges on terrorism
Turkish television NTV reported that Istanbul Deputy Chief Prosecutor Turhan Colakkadi as saying an indictment against Ergenekon had been completed and its members would be tried for terrorism.
Cumhuriyet daily columnist Cuneyt Arcayurek and lawyer Lutfuhan Karagozoglu, representing the newspaper, reportedly said documents belonging to journalist Mustafa Balbay were confiscated by police and taken to Istanbul.
“Three computers, two of them portable computers, and some CDs were taken,” Karagozoglu was quoted by Turkish daily Hurriyet as saying.
Karagozoglu also said that although the decision to start the investigation was taken on June 29 the conducting of the police operation on Tuesday raises suspicions and implies a coincidence with the top prosecutor presenting his testimony.
In a response to Cumhuriyet's claims that the prosecutors intentionally waited two days to coincide the detentions with the verbal indictment in the closure case, the Defence Minister said it took time to organise all the required permissions, Hurriyet reported.

Comment: Ergenekon investigation in Turkey

COMMENT: By Marios Matsakis MEP 03.JUL.08
The recent swift detentions in relation to the Ergenekon investigation in Turkey, demonstrates clearly the strong will of the democratically elected government of the country, to stamp out terrorist activity where-ever it comes from, even from within its own Army ranks.

Prime Minister Erdogan and his Government are to be warmly congratulated for the courage demonstrated in such drastic action, which aims solely at upholding the Rule of Law and at making sure that, the investigation into a highly dangerous criminal conspiracy against Democracy and the Turkish people, is carried out fully and decidedly.

Whilst of course expecting that, all human rights of detainees should be fully respected, the European Union must provide all political support needed to the Turkish Government in these difficult times in order to assist it, to proceed in its difficult task of rooting out what appears to be an Army instigated terrorism in the country.

The time has come it seems, to attempt seriously, to send the Army Generals back to their barracks, or to prison in some instances, and leave politics to the democratically elected Politicians.

It is my strong belief that, all efforts in this direction will help to bring Turkey even closer to Europe and its Fundamental Principles of Democracy and Justice.

They will also help to bring Turkish political life into the 21st century and not leave it to stagnate into the 1920's, as some narrow-minded fanatics in the country so desperately want.
