Hi everybody!
I am currently writing my master thesis about the languages of Cyprus and I ve set up a survey of 25 questions to find out more about the language use and language contact in Cyprus.
The survey is available in English, Greek and Turkish.
Everyone who is living in Cyprus can participate!
So please, help me by filling in my survey because I need as many responses as possible!
Here is the link: http://www.cyprus-questionnaire.de
Thank you so much!
Ariane

@repulsewarrior:
Thank you!
Sure, I can post the results of my survey here in the forum! But you will have to be patient until December
If you liked the survey, please post the link in other forums as well.
Have a nice weekend!!

City, I've done the survey it worked.
Hey Ariane, can you please explain the intentions of the survey, I didn't understand because I though it was about languages but at the end it had some questions of political orientation that in my opinion have nothing to do with languages in Cyprus or no?
eg. Identity or where you involved in Bi-communal activities. |

@stavrizatz thank you for helping me with my survey!
You are right, maybe I should explain the intentions of my survey and tell a bit more about my thesis, so here it is :
I am a student of International Information Management with the focus on Applied Linguistics and Intercultural Communication. That’s why I would like to find out more about the status of the different languages in Cyprus (eg in which situations do people use English / Greek or Turkish) and additionally in which language does inter-communal communication take place (if there is any interaction at all).
I would like to know whether in general there is interest in getting to know each other that’s why I choose some questions about the bicommunal activities/contact. I am not interested in the people’s political orientation or opinion about the political future of Cyprus.
I did not intend to cause trouble or insecurities but if I did, I deeply apologize for it! |

Why would you cause insecurity and trouble?
No I was just wondering.
But sorry if I am 'a pain in the arse' with ny questions...but why do ask about identity and specifically the question, are you Greek, Turkish, Greek Cypriot, Turkish Cypriot, Cypriot, other? That is what I mean political orientation because when a survey was presented at ledra palace not long ago, not about language but about the likelyhood of a Greek Cypriot visiting the occupied areas and the likelyhood of Turkish Cypriot to visit the free areas, it used similar questions such as how often to you visit the other side, are you involved in bicommunal activities, and of course the classic question of identity I mentioned earlier. You see in Cyprus according to how someone answers that question we can automaticaly understand their position of the Cyprus problem (not always). The Cypriots who answer Greek and Turks are the nationalists, the just Cypriot are the new age Cypriots who are pro unification and common Cypriot identity, the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot are those who are not strongly towards either of the two sides. In N.Ireland is the same but the ask a different question to find that out eg what is your football team, what school do you go?
take care and good luck with your research. |

...indeed, i am a Cypriot. i am identified as a Grecophone, whether i like it or not...
politics.
in Cyprus we have not as yet been able to find a suitable definition for 'Bicommunality', i.e. an identity as Individuals, and an identity as Persons (without their mutual exclusivity).
if a Solution is found that sustains this Principal, i hope it will be a great contribution to all Humanity. |

Exactly, well I believe in multiculturalism, in one humanity, no different but equal to everyone else as a person but diverse as an individual. I cannot deny my Greek ethnic identity but I can neither deny my Cypriot local identity, but that does not make me more or less Cypriot to a child of a Sri Lankan migrant to Cyprus. |
