By Sebastian Heller Published on February 7, 2010, Cyprus Mail

A COMMUNITY living in northern Scandinavia may hold the key to how the Maronites can save their ancient language which dates back to biblical times.

Cypriot Maronite Arabic (CMA) is a distinct language composed of a mixture of Arabic and Aramaic, the language of Jesus Christ and his disciples, but its use has been in decline for more than 30 years.

A seminar in Nicosia this weekend will look at ways to reverse this trend by focusing on the lessons learnt from the Sami community in far northern Scandinavia.

“The situation of the Maronite community in Cyprus is very similar to the situation of the Sami 30 years ago, where they were being assimilated by the dominant Norwegian group,” said Costas Costantinou, a professor from the University of Keele who has helped organise the workshop.

The Sámi, more commonly known as Lapps, initially faced conditions and challenges very similar to those of the Maronite community in Cyprus. Consequently the workshop is intended “To see what wisdom, what good practice can be taken from their case, as their example is very successful,” said Costantinou.

The total size of the Maronite community in Cyprus numbers around 5,500, and around 1,000 of them speak CMA. Traditionally, only the Maronites from the occupied village of Kormakitis spoke the language. Members of the community from the other Maronite villages - Asomatos, Karpasia and Ayia Marina - are all Greek speakers. Following the 1974 invasion, the majority of the Maronites from Kormakitis moved south and the language went into sharp decline.

“Up until the present day, it was exclusively from the home that we would learn the language. In the past, when we were in our villages, the whole context supported it, it was easy to speak our language,” said Peppinos Moussas, a Maronite currently living in Nicosia, “Afterwards, once we were scattered, it was difficult.”

Nowadays, large efforts are being made on a social level, and in an organised way, to rejuvenate the language and culture particularly for those under the age of 30.

Following a number of Council of Europe resolutions and recommendations, in November 2008 the Republic of Cyprus formally declared to the Council of Europe that it recognises CMA as a minority language. As a result “the state has various legal responsibilities from now on to protect the language,” said Moussas.

Like the Sami, who 30 years ago were in the position where the dominant Norweigian majority was trying to assimilate them into their culture, language and society, the Maronites do not want to be viewed as a “religious group” but as a “community”.

“There have been repeated calls from our representative, Mr Hadjiroussos, for us to recognised as such,” said Giorgos Skordis, a Maronite who co-ordinates the Xki Fi Sanna (Speak Our Language) educational programme involving approximately 30 students. He emphasised that the Maronites, though they have developed alongside the mainstream population for centuries (since the 7th century AD) have a different history, different heritage, religion and, of course, a distinct language.

“The existence of CMA provides the ‘hard fact’ that Maronites are a national minority with a distinct ethnic identity, not merely a ‘religious group’ that is compelled to affiliate to either the Greek or Turkish Cypriot community as provided by Article 2 of the 1960 Cypriot Constitution,” noted Costantinou in his article “The Protection and Revival of Cypriot Maronite Arabic” produced for the Peace Research Institute Oslo centre which is organising this weekend’s workshop.

The Xki Fi Sanna initiative is co-funded by the European Economic Area countries of Norway, Iceland, Lichtenstein and Switzerland (90 per cent of the cost) and the Republic of Cyprus (10 per cent).

http://www.etaiwannews.com/etn/news_content.php?id=1196284&lang=eng_news&cate_img=317.jpg&cate_rss=news_Features

...if it were possible for two, why not three National Assemblies, (or more), within a united Cyprus: more than three Governances, two levels; this is Bicommunal. There is a distinctive value of Cyprus because it is still alive culturally, and it has so much diversity with roots 5,000 years old. beyond being "greeks" or "turks", "moslem" or "christian" if you will, the issue for all of us is the recognition of our identities, as Persons as well as Individuals.

...and if it were possible to give National Assemblies land over which they can sustain themselves as a People there is no reason to believe that as People they would not want a government where they can sustain a sense which goes beyond any single Heritance, a State.

...enclaves which spot the whole island secures the return for at least some of the displaced as communities, others like the Maronites warrant this same recognition. for the settlers who will be displaced recognition for some, as Cypriots a change with homes instead of houses. for all of us free movement, expression and association. even with the green line unchanged, a diversity for each in their population, and no "border".
under a central government this would be Bizonal; rather than tearing the island in two.

...please read my manifesto.

Eroğlu, speaking to diplomatic correspondents in Ankara late on Thursday, made the remarks when asked to comment on Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s recent statement that Turkey is ready to pull its troops from Cyprus in the event of a deal.

Eroğlu said this issue will not be on the agenda as long as there is no peace deal in Cyprus. While recalling that Greek Cypriots overwhelmingly said “no” to a UN plan to reunify Cyprus in 2004, Eroğlu said the plan had proposed a significant withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus.

The much-hyped speculation surrounding the KKTC’s “hard-liner” prime minister, who is the favorite in the upcoming April 18 presidential election in the KKTC, is that reunification negotiations -- currently led by Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias -- will come to a halt once Eroğlu becomes president. Noting that if he is elected president his priority will be to advance the negotiations, Eroğlu said, however, that Turkey’s security guarantees in Cyprus were a requirement for the Turkish Cypriots.

Meanwhile, the UN secretary-general’s special advisor on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, praised Erdoğan for his remarks on a possible troop withdrawal made during a rare interview with Greek Cypriot newspapers over the weekend. Downer, speaking to reporters on Thursday, said this is the first time a Turkish prime minister has specifically and clearly supported a bizonal, bicommunal international entity based on federal political equality. Downer said Erdoğan’s remarks were indicative of the positive atmosphere and the progress of the Cyprus reunification process.

General Chat :: Energy from Wind

Subject: Energy from Wind
Posted: Thu Feb 25, 2010 3:49 pm (GMT 3)
:

Wind energy is the most cost effective and resourceful source of green energy. The alternate sources of energy include wind, sun and the ocean. When the sun shines, it heats up the earth surface, which in turn creates blowing winds. The blowing wind turns the blades of the wind turbine that rotates the generator which produces electricity.

The technology in the field of wind energy has advanced over the years and so has the wind power investment opportunities. This sure is indicative of a bright future ahead for the wind energy industry. The wind turbines available today are of two varieties: 2 blades and 3 blades. Large wind turbines have a capacity of above 50 kilowatts.

With the help of wind energy, the energy consumption in a residence can be reduced by 50% to 90%. Excess energy produced by the wind energy systems can be utilized by selling it to the public utility company.

They include four admirals, a general and two colonels, some of them retired.

The seven were among more than 40 officers arrested on Monday over an alleged 2003 plot to stir up chaos in Turkey and justify a military coup.

By George Psyllides Published on February 20, 2010 +

THE GOVERNMENT has prepared an amendment to the law on Turkish Cypriot properties, to allow their return in certain cases.

The bill, which had been kept under wraps because of the sensitivity of the issue, was meant to be approved on Thursday but was postponed until next week.

The current law, as interpreted by court decisions on an appellate level, does not leave room for release of the property as long as the state of emergency is still in force.

After the 1974 Turkish invasion, the Republic put all Turkish Cypriot properties – in the government-controlled areas -- under the guardianship of the Interior Minister, who prohibits their sale, exchange and transfer because of the state of emergency.

Properties have been returned to the Turkish Cypriot owners or they were paid compensation or both, but this practice has not been enshrined in the law.

The ‘classified’ report accompanying the bill said it was deemed necessary “on one hand to deal with cases in which the guardianship status of the property potentially violated the European Human Rights Convention and on the other hand avoid a situation where the law, due to its absoluteness, constitutes denial of property.”

The changes were prompted by a recent case before the ECHR in which the Republic settled to pay a Turkish Cypriot €500,000 as damages for loss of use of one-and-a-half houses (she is co-owner in the second) in Larnaca in which Greek Cypriot refugees are living.

The main changes to the law that would allow the Guardian to release a property concern cases where: the Turkish Cypriot owner lived abroad -- where he went before or after the invasion and continues to live there or will return to live in the government-controlled areas.

Previously only Turkish Cypriots who had left before the invasion could claim their property.

The bill also says that properties whose owners settled permanently in the government-controlled areas, and homes whose owners or families are planning to move into for permanent settlement, are factors that will be considered positively when examining an application.

“The said amendment of the law – which is retroactive – has the potential to prevent the examination of cases by the ECHR before the Turkish Cypriot applicants exhaust the remedies provided by the Republic,” the accompanying report said.

According to the report, a number of Turkish Cypriots appeal directly to the ECHR, without seeking recourse at Cypriot courts, saying that the current law allows restrictions on the right to property.

“The Turkish Cypriot owners consider that they have no chance of success in Cypriot courts,” the report said.

The change will also give time to the government to “gradually” adopt the necessary legal measures in the cases the applicant is not vindicated by a local court, the report said.

However, the report said, if they are vindicated by the ECHR the republic would have to comply with the decision inside “suffocating timeframes” to ascertain that the rights of all Turkish Cypriot owners are not violated and not just the applicant’s.

Hi crash, nice to see some life here.
But one shouldn't throw stones when sitting in a glass house....

Fine by me you as a mod. Seems you have grown up since this venture here started off almost 5 years ago and since I last (well, was a one off) saw you

Taking into consideration that seemingly none of the mods is here on a daily basis, I think it would be good to have you as a new addition to the team.
So everybody will do a bit of part time and we should get the job covered.

Thumbs up from me!!!!

All water cuts have been cancelled. Since Tuesday mains supply should be uninterrupted.

Experience shows that after a water rationing is stopped, usage spirales beyond pre-cut levels.

I tend to agree with what Christofias has said, that it is a provocation from the people who don't want a solution. If this stealing did not occur, then only a few people would have remembered that it was his anniversary of death. By doing this, even though he is not around any more, his name is out there again in the headlines, his stance is brought back into the minds of the people, as an alternative to Christofias' stance. Or something like this.

Sounds very resonable to me in the current climate.
And they are not anywhere near solving the case, more than two month later......
AGENDA: Nami and Iacovou
NICOSIA---The two leaders in Cyprus will meet again for direct UN-brokered talks on February 24, March 4, 16 and 30, an official announcement said on Friday.

“In coordination with the United Nations, four dates proposed by President Christofias were accepted,” added the official announcement.

On Thursday, Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat urged the Greek Cypriot side to agree to more talk sessions in order to build up momentum before ‘elections’ in the breakaway north in April.

Reunification talks are taking a break after the second phase of intensive negotiations wrapped up on January 29.

There have been contacts between senior aides George Iacovou and Ozdil Nami to map out an agenda.

"The primary source of food for the snake is being threatened by this alien species," an official from Cyprus's Department of Fisheries and Marine Research told Reuters.

Largemouth bass feed in shallow waters near the banks of reservoirs, the same breeding ground used by the Natrix natrix cypriaca.

Cyprus lists the snake as critically endangered. The snake is harmless, and will not poison or bite. If threatened, it will either emit a foul-smelling fluid which it attempts to smear on its predator - or plays dead.

"They turn themselves upside down with the mouth open and the tongue hanging out," the Fisheries Department said on its website.

Remains of Natrix natrix cypriaca have been discovered at Aetokremmos, the oldest prehistoric site on Cyprus, dating back 12 000 years.

Xyliatos, nestled in the foothills of Troodos, the central mountain range of the Mediterranean island, is one of the very few areas where it still lives.

The anglers had originally been banned from the area to stop them trampling over the banks and inadvertently destroying the snake's habitat.

Now the threat from the bass has become too great.

Officially, I was there to inaugurate a reconstruction plan for buildings that had fallen into disrepair in the old buffer zone. More personally, I wanted to see for myself the divide that for too long had kept Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots apart. As I walked the street, people from both communities crowded around and began chanting, “Solution now! Solution now!”

As a Korean, I know only too well the pain of a land divided. I also know how difficult reconciliation can be. That is why I went to Cyprus – to show my personal support for the efforts to reunify the island, and to push for further progress.

Cyprus is at a critical juncture. The Greek Cypriot leader, Demetris Christofias, and his Turkish Cypriot counterpart, Mehmet Ali Talat, are working hard to reach an agreement. But it will elude them without a further concerted push.
February 9th, 2010

Nearly 11 million cubic metres of water have flowed into dams in Cyprus since the beginning of February raising the water reserves to 51%.

Water reserves during February 2009 were only at 12% capacity.

Water Board official Fedros Rousis said that on Monday alone nearly 2 million cubic metres of water had accumulated in dams around the island.

He added that water levels at present were satisfactory but called on the public to still be sparing with water so as to avoid any problems in the near future.

You guys put Kebabs on Pizzas. Genius and odd in equal measures. Also came a fan of Turkish Tea, mainly the sugar more than the tea but lets not split hairs.
Still studying, hence my general absence. Might be popping over to the island in Easter. First time since 2001 I think.

Nothing has been gained per se. Just that which is right and just has been upheld.

It will help the situation as there is less of an incentive for there to be no solution. Selling stolen assets/land suits quite a lot of people in a financial sense.

:

the Orams protested, a
matter of plight. facts on
the ground was a plea
to be heard, on the ground.

what was the case, not
property, its ownership unquestionable
but passage, the trespass
an issue sponsors pressed
this far. the results are monumental
for plunderers worldwide
a signal, without consent
there is no issue to plea

...so it is a victory for all Cypriots
it is a victory for all Mankind, indeed
for all Humanity because what is
a Universal Right, prevails.

:

I am just wondering what the Orams case has 'achieved'.

If what is has achieved is recognition in courts outside the RoC that pre 74 GC owners remain legal owners of property in the North, then that was already the case with the ECHR rulings that came before the Orams case.

Certainly it has achieved damage to the sale of property in the North to those with EU assets. Maybe this will help the propsects for a solution but it just as easy to imagine that it has and will worsen them.

We need a political solution. These limited private civil actions are just that, limited private civil actions and ones that do not result in any return or resolution even re the indivdual property concerned let alone in general terms.
January 31, 2010
By Helen Christophi

PANICOS Neocleous, author of the 2009 book, The Ignored: 1974, which presents 50 interviews with former Greek Cypriot soldiers about their experiences fighting during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, is preparing a new volume of interviews, this time including accounts from Turkish Cypriot and mainland Greek and Turkish participants and their families.

Neocleous says the purpose of his first book was to demonstrate how the Greek government and military “betrayed Cyprus”, as well as to highlight the behaviour of the Turkish military and the United Nations during the war. And more than anything, Neocleous wanted to show how the “Cypriot government ignored its own Greek Cypriot fighters”. But he characterises his current collection as a tool for “sending a message of peace in Cyprus” to the country’s younger generations.

“They are the stories of Greek and Turkish Cypriots,” says Neocleous. “All I meet, the people who suffered [during the invasion], speak of peace. We will try to use this as a message for the young people to work for peace.”

Neocleous has collected nine accounts thus far, but the story of Soyat Kafatar, the sole survivor of an 84-person massacre of Turkish Cypriots in the village of Tochni by EOKA B forces in the summer of 1974, stands out as an example of the book’s purpose. Soyat, his father, and the other males of the village were arrested, bussed to the fields outside Agia Phila, and shot dead. All except Soyat, who survived by virtue of his father’s brains having splattered onto Soyat’s face when he was shot in the head, and the killer skipping over Soyat on the assumption that the detritus in which he was covered was his own.

Soyat played dead until the soldiers left the field to fetch bulldozers to dispose of the freshly-killed corpses. He escaped into the woods and eventually settled in the village of Bouno in the occupied north of the island.

At the end of the interview Neocleous asks Soyat to characterise his feelings toward Greek Cypriots: “Love,” responds Soyat, followed by a resolve to “not blame all Greeks for the evil done”.

Soyat’s story is not the only one in Neocleous’ books that has resulted in forgiveness between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. An account in The Ignored tells how a Turkish Cypriot soldier, Fat’hi Akinci, fired what should have been a fatal bullet into the head of a Greek Cypriot fighter, Yiannis Maratheftis, led to their meeting 35 years later and formed a warm friendship.

Now, schools are inviting Neocleous’ Greek and Turkish Cypriot interviewees to speak to students about peace. They made one presentation in Limassol last December and are scheduled to make a second presentation in the same city next month.

“The majority of young people do not know what happened in Cyprus,” Neocleous asserts. “Many of the pupils are hearing this for the first time, and from those who lived it, from the people who suffered in the war. I want to leave the truth for future generations.”
Steve comments:
Erden, there are plenty of GCs who acknowledge 2 sides to every story & who know that there were wrongs commited by both sides in this conflict. Both sides still suffer from the tragedy of 1974.
Finally, a Greek Cypriot who acknowledges that there is 2 sides to every story and Greek Cypriots were not as innocent as they like to believe. Well done

This is a great initiative. However perhaps it should be todays politicians and the Archbishop that the initiative is aimed at.

The biggest sin of the first generation of settlers was not the return to Judea and Samaria; the return to the land of our forefathers is not a sin. We returned to a place to which we have a historic belonging. The story of the People of Israel has much more to do with Gush Etzion than with Tel Aviv. But the big mistake for which we are now paying the price is that we did not dare, we did not agree, we were unable to look around and say: there are other people here. You have to know how to live with them and how to accept them."

The indictment puts forward several pieces of evidence for a frightening planned act of terror of the junta nested within the Naval Forces Command against young students visiting the Koç Museum. According to the plan, several blocks of TNT and other explosives placed at the bottom of a submarine exhibited at the museum would be detonated while a large group of students was visiting the museum...
NICOSIA-The island’s two leaders have achieved significant progress on the governance issue during Friday’s meeting, UN envoy Alexander Downer told journalists.

“The leaders have left the meeting feeling positive and there will be a bit more to say next week when the UN Secretary-General is here and the leaders meet with him on Monday afternoon,” he also said.

Friday’s meeting concluded the second round of UN-led intensive talks, as part of their effort to find a negotiated settlement to the Cyprus problem.
Asked whether the chapter on governance has been concluded or not, the UN official reiterated that the leaders will have more to say about this on Monday afternoon.

“So, I am not going to go into any of the details here”, he added.
On the future of the peace process, Downer said that the leaders are going to talk about future programming during the meeting on Monday with Ban Ki-moon.

General Chat :: Levels in Spirituality

Subject: Levels in Spirituality
Levels in Spirituality

Miracles are just fundamental level of elementary schools, which are widely spread everywhere, by the wish of God. Even evil people can do these miracles by black magic. The idea behind such wide covering range of miracles is that these miracles are useful in converting atheists into theists. For such elementary work, human incarnations or professors are not necessary.

The next level is Jnana Yoga, which is the level of high schools. The high schools are lesser in number than elementary schools because only some converted theists start the enquiry about the subject (Jnana Yoga) of the unimaginable God, since His existence was indirectly proved through the unimaginable miracles and He is the source of the unimaginable power behind the miracles.

The next higher level is formation of theoretical love (Bhakti Yoga) or devotion on the Lord since a few of the scholars of God get this and this level is the level of colleges.

The ultimate highest level is practical devotion (Karma Yoga) or service to God, which is the level of University and is very rare since a few of devotees only can become servants of God through practical sacrifice of work and fruit of work. The scientific analysis of divine knowledge (Jnana Yoga) is pervading all the four levels as the basic torchlight. In the first level, the existence of God is accepted. In the second level, the existence of unimaginable God is accepted.

In the third level, the representatives of God like statues in human form are worshipped by words and mind to get rid of ego and jealousy towards human form. In the fourth level, the decision of the final conclusion of the intellectual analysis results in detecting the contemporary human incarnation and involve in a practical service in His mission.
