Bicommunal in my mind means the recognition of people as Individuals and as well, as Persons. A strong Central government will serve to protect and defend the Individual Rights of all citizens equally as a State, and as this island's dwellers. National Assemblies will allow, on the other hand, Communities to sustain themselves through self representation, with a territorial Jurisdiction overwhich they can serve; as well as allowing its majority to demonstrate their commitment to Basic Human Rights, by providing for the special needs of the minorities (regardless the population's size) amongst them.

Added to this effort, since 1974, is the Principal of Bizonality which never meant tearing the island in two, nor the acceptance of a 'fait accompli' through illegal acts. Thus, beyond the Right of Return for displaced individuals there is the issue of communities lost to the intolerance of extremists whose success has left them alone satisfied with at least having isolated themselves from their counterparts.

Enclaves are not a dirty word if like spots which cover the entire island, they are added to the geographic fabric. They will serve to end this unnatural isolation. They will add diversity to each culture, both Grecophone and Turcophone (Maronite, Armenian, etc.as well). They will allow for less disruption and more choice for the affected. They will allow for a return of many communities lost to ignorant acts. They will allow for an end to the "border" even if it remains, with Free Movement, Association and Expression equally for all. While many frontiers will exist, all citizens will have as Individuals an identity as Cypriots while people will enjoy an identity that has its own distinctions as Persons, by their location as well as culture.

Beyond the Nationalistic pride foisted on these people through their respective "motherlands", there is the necessity for the betterment of a condition which is Human, with an end to the denials which fuel the impasse, an end to the pain caused by the proxy war of these interlocutors, and an end to the subjugation which has existed in the broadest sense for thousands of years over the island's inhabitants, which the rest of us can emulate with esteem.

And that, strangely, is the one weakness Christofias has going into this. How can a politician react purely emotionally because he is "hurt" by a comment? I expect much more from him but first he has to let go of this caution that seems to come from the fact that he still doesn't believe he's President.

The rejectionists have lost influence, but only relatively to before. Notice that they still control almost the entire news media and that despite getting laughable results in the EU elections they still put themselves forward- with those same media giving them almost equal air time as the three strongest parties.

But have you heard if, and how, Talat reacted to the peace? I suspect he was much more careful than his comrade.

Christofias made the comments without even being asked about it. He was really hurt by the comments, but you are correct about the rejectionists. However, their influence (post Papadopoulos) seems to be diminishing especially with the internal bickering inside DIKO where the hard liners seemed to win the day at first, but then, possibly because of this, DIKO lost massively in the euroelections. Perhaps the government carrot Christofias holds infront of them is the best way to keep them at bay.

So, today I read that Christofias complained about his peace on his way out to Brussels, calling it more or less propaganda, or something? Has he actually read it? Doesn't he realise that in a way it can be seen as containing a positive message?

Hi, glad to have found you guys. Though it's sad that the forum doesn't seem to be as active as in the past...

But dont' get me wrong repulsewarrior, I'm not some cold-blooded cynic. I dream and hope that Christofias and Talat will manage to come to an agreement despite their personal and political limitations, and I hope that because I can see the potential.

But we can't put our hopes on one man that rules a far away country that, for all it's world power, will probably have no time or priority to deal with Cyprus. I remember hearing that when Carter [I think] was elected in the US the G/C were ringing church bells in celebration, and when Clinton was first elected there was again an upsurge of optimism from G/C because Clinton was "our friend", whatever that means. Don't take what US Presidential candidates tell diasporas to court their votes- it's usually generic and vacuous and soon forgotten.

If there's anything to hope for from the Obama election is a world where the reigning world country attempts to discuss with who it considers its enemy rather than opt for belligerency from the get-go. The more stable such a world, and our region, might become by result, the easier it might be for us to reach a solution and sustain. Other than that, I am sorry, I can't be excited that Obama "is going to solve it".

I think we are all more or less still here, and from time to time read what's being posted. Still a lot has changed since the heady days of 2005, when Annan was still fresh and people were expectant of an imminent solution. Since then however......................nothing much positive has happened. The same dreary dreary.

no, no phoneline. From what I understand CYTA does not provide service in 'undeveloped areas'. And since there is no road going to that house, only a dirt track, I think its classed 'undeveloped'.

Bandwidth is not only about actually downloading stuff more important imo is how long a website needs to display properly or how fast I can navigate from one page to the next. Like in the forum.... it's soooo annoying needing to wait till the next page opens or the reply-box....

You are certainly right that Larnaca does have 'proper' broadband coverage (well, sort of, if you call 2MB proper ), but the house in question is in a somewhat remote location, hence the satellite connection.

The reliability is very much dependent on the proper setup of the hardware city, but assuming that there is nothing wrong with the setup (angle of the dish, any surrounding big trees or buildings around blocking the signals between the dish and satellite etc.), it is should be pretty much stable. Of course, there is also the question of the stability of the provider. You might have the perfect connection between you and the satellite, but if your provider has some problems, you will have connection problems as well.

Internet providers, big internet cafes etc. need a huge amount of down-bandwidth and much much less up-bandwidth. Using certain software, you can use two different (and multiple) channels to provide internet access for your customers, for example, you can use ADSL for up-connections and satellite for down-connections. But of course, using one way connection means that you will have to get the opposite way connection by some other means, otherwise you don't have internet access! So, you must get a two way connection.

Hi city,

It works pretty much the same way the setup you use to watch satellite tv. You use a satellite dish with a LNB and a special satellite modem connected to it. So, yes, you certainly need this hardware to access internet via satellite.

Of course, there are companies (which you can find via google) who sell satellite internet packages over different satellites. The fees really depend on the company where the subscription is from.

I think that the landlord already has the necessary equipment and a subscription from a certain company, for otherwise it does not make sense to say that the apartment has satellite internet.

Satellite internet access is useful in places where there is no "suitable" telecom infrastructure with ADSL provided. With the current advances in ADSL technology and moreover, the high costs of satellite internet, I would say that it is basically throwing away your money. I presume you have ADSL in Larnaca already?

Hi everybody,

can someone explain to me how this works please?
I don't mean the technical side of it

I've been offered a place for rent that does have internet by satellite.
They said there is a monthly charge of approx. Eur 50. Thats all I know.

Do I need any specific hardware?
Are there other charges? If so, are they by time or by volume?
What bandwidth does it normally offer?
Is it stable/reliable?

I agree with Erol,

They went to the finals and the judges seem to love them but they didn't offer anything more from the first time in the auditions

In the final they had a better performance than the semi finals but still they cannot be compared to the dance groups flawless and diversity. These groups were amazing.

At the end Diversity won the competition, Susan Boyle came second and the trumpet player came third.

Well, Michael spends most of his time in Nicosia these days. He has made lots of new friends and we cannot keep him at home. He knows just about every single shop owner and some of his restaurant-owner friends even invite him to cook for them! You know how he likes cooking.

Hey Bananiot,

You are right. But tell me, how understanding could I be when someone is so ignorant about the facts and about the reasons of why we are in this situation as the TCs? How calm could I remain my friend, when we are at the edge of disappearing as a community and someone is making propaganda of UBP and Denktas, who are the number one responsible sides for this, with their complete lack of vision and incompetent leaders. Like many people in our community, I am afraid of our future Bananiot. This party, UBP, has caused some serious damage to our community in the past (not only in the Cyprus problem) and we are afraid of what cost we might have to pay this time.

That would make sense Ban (as much and as little as anything else).

The problems I had were when the border guards didn't understand that, because the UK and the ROC are both in the EU, you don't get stamps in your passport when you enter/leave either.
