Here are the main changes to the forum.
The 'real' urls of the forum have changed from just >www.talkcyprus.org/<whatever> to >www.talkcyprus.org/forum/<whatever>. URL's without the added 'forum' on the end should still work (by redirection).
The 'front page' of the forum is now a 'portal page' and not the main forum index as before. For those of you that do not like the portal page and just wish to go straight to the main forum index as you used to you can bookmark the following url which will take you to the main forum index page wiothout having to go via the protal page www.talkcyprus.org/forum/index.php
We still need to decide exaactly what information should be on the portal page (for both logged in users and 'guests'). This means which sections do we want on portal page and what settings do we want within each section.
To goto the portal page from any other forum page you can click on the 'home' link in the menu along the top of each page or click on the logo at the top of each page. To goto the main forum index from any forum page other than the portal page you can use the "www.talkcyprus.org Forum Index" at the top of each forum page. To goto the main forum index from the portal page use the 'forum' link in the forum naviagation box at the top leftish of the portal page.
A calendar function has been added to the forum. This allows any logged on user to enter an 'event' for a specific date. These events have to be 'approved' before they are viewable by others. Again for the moment only myself and lexandros can approve event submission. The full size version of the calendar can be viewd by clicking on the 'calendar' option in the menu at the top of every forum page. A 'medium size' version fo the calendar can be viewed at the bottom of the main forum index page. A 'small' version of the calendar can be viewed from the portal page.
I think we should also have a specific forum section for 'events'. Then when an event is added to the calendar (like a cemetary clean up, or a pop concert or such like) a thread can be started in the events section of the forum and a link from the calendar entry made to the this thread. Then any discussion about the event can go there, but we need to agree this new forum section
An extended forum statistics package has been added to the forum. This can be access from the forum naviagation section of the portal page by selecting the 'statistics' link. Various forum stats are shown there. Again we need decide which of these if any should be viewable to 'guests' and which only to logged on users.
A photo album function has been added to the forum. This allows the creation of both public and personal photo galleries. More info on the use of the Photo Gallery can be found here http://www.talkcyprus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=937

Great work man!
Two things you might want to know:
1. There is a typo in the URL for forum index page. The correct address is www.talkcyprus.org/forum/index.php and not www.talkcyprus.org/forum.index.php .
2. The portal page is way too wide. It doesn't fit into a browser window and appears with horizontal scroll bar. I guess it uses absolute table width in pixel, rather than relative in percent.
Other than these two, everything works great. I didn't even have to change my RSS subscription settings. |

Yeah this is a firefox probelm. Apparently according to some it's a bug in firefox itself. I am not so sure myself. It is caused by the 'recent posts' block on the portal page as far as I can tell. The table width in the recent posts block is in % (100%). Removing this width setting entirely in the recent topics block code fixes the problem for firefox, but it creates a new one in IE - namely that all the scrolling topic list are all squashed up to the left of the block in 1 pixel
I 'll keep looking around for a fix that works with both IE and firefox. Is there a way in html to run with one table setting if browsers is ie and another if firefox? If so that might be the easiest fix.
PS thanks for your help with the redirect commands. |
