Turkish Cypriot architect arrested for refugee property developments
By John Leonidou
A TURKISH Cypriot architect was remanded in custody for eight days yesterday after being charged with designing luxury houses and hotels that are being illegally constructed on Greek Cypriot land in the occupied north.
The man was arrested at the Ayios Dometios checkpoint on Tuesday after customs officers searching his car came across seven box files containing architectural plans and documents issued by the Turkish Cypriot authorities........... |

| I find it somewhat bizzare that the Republic of Cyprus is choosing to prosecute a Turkish Cypriot for designing property that is then built on pre 74 Greek Cypriot land, but not arresting Turkish Cypriot or others that have bought such property and live in such property? Surely if it is a crime to take payment for desiging such property it must then be a crime to buy them once built and live in them? Why then the arrest of this person and not any arrest of thousands of Turkish Cypriot or british expats for that matter that cross regularly into the south and have bought and live in property that were Greek Cypriot controled pre 74 or on land that was? To me it seems a very arbitary enforcment of the law and that is never good is it? |

I think the police a few weeks ago also stopped some British how was going through the checkpoint holding some plans and contracts for buying a property.
Seeing an architect as just a "designer" it seems a bit strange arresting him. However, the architect is often the one leading the development team in these projects.
Strange move, but the real estate developments of the last couple of years is rather upsetting... |

Is it possible that the current situation with the Turkish architect will start to send maybe a good or bad message to the T/C's who regularly cross the divide.
My view is not about whether he is right or wrong for drawing plans on land belonging to someone else |

I would assume it is some sort of carrot and stick tactic... |

Well, with the loads of Turkish Cypriot that do work in the south it does seem to me to be working quite fine - I am sure there are exceptions. Still, officially, in terms of unions etc, the line is that Turkish Cypriot should be paid as much as the Greek speaking Cypriots. with this in mind many Greek Cypriots still prefer hiring Turkish Cypriot instead of much cheaper other work force (usually from anywhere between Syria and India). To my knowledge the majority of Turkish Cypriots working for Greek Cypriots also seems to have a good relationship - and no one is complaining if they are refugees and living in a Greek Cypriot property.
In addition there is also the free health care, quick sale of electricity etc. In some way there is some idea to try to make the live as easy as possible for the Turkish Cypriots, as long as it would not lead to non-reversible moves with regards to the cy-prob.
Now, do not think that I would defend every move of this government......, and I do not (either) think that everything is roosy. However, I think someone is trying to come up with some carrots. |

My friend you have made a fair comment on which i will try to find out more on the views of G/c's & T/c's not actually on our forum.
Maybe i could ask my mother in the north if she know's of anyone who actually work's in the south & also i am fortunate that my Father in law is a greekcypriot businessman who could also tell me of the views from people he knows in the building industry |

Last night two car loads of Turkish Cypriots were dragged to Engomi police station because they found in the poccession of a Turkish Cypriot lady in one of the cars some plans and sketches for the development of an area in Kyrenia. A couple of Greek Cypriot lawyers sped to their help (one of them was traitor Papapetrou) and after a couple of hours they managed to get them released with a minimum of damage.
Koulentis, the chief of Police said today that this policy will continue but mark my words, this strange government of ours will soon be calling for the closure of the borders so that we can return to the good old days, when things were simpler and straight forward. They on one side and us on the other! |

| I didn't, I was there. One of the Turkish Cypriots that was taken to the police station is a friend of mine and he gave me a ring so I popped there to see what was happening. The Police chief was on radio this morning. |
