Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to EP: Stop Violating Representation Rights

The High-level Contact Group formed by the European Parliament (EP) to improve relations with Turkish Cyprus held contacts at the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) yesterday.

Fatma Ekenoglu, the Deputy President and President of the Assembly, asked the group to take the necessary measures for the representation of Turkish Cypriots in the EP.

"We should be represented as Turkish Cyprus in the European Parliament," said Ekenoglu, reminding that the presence of German, French and Polish parliaments in the group visiting Cyprus reflected the richness of the EP.

Turkish Cypriots ask for representation in the seats the Greeks currently occupy in place of Turkish Cypriots in the EP, Ekenoglu informed, and that President Mehmet Ali Talat had communicated his demand for representation in EP on three occasions.

"We are not Cypriots in the North, but Turkish Cypriots; we will never abandon our identity," said Ekenoglu, in response to the term "Northern Cypriots" used by the delegation.

There was no official emblem representing the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the areas closed to the press upon the request of the EP representatives.

Eric, You would deny your "Turkish Cypriotness" just like you deny that your origins are "Cypriot", because you are neither. You are a person who desires to be Turkish. You have made this abundantly clear, and that is an opinion which you should support clearly, with arguments in its favour. You do a disservice to your cause if you continue hiding behind your "Turkish" origins as a "Turkish Cypriot".

If your contribution is to promote dialog, you have helped us a great deal, to identify the strength of our own feelings, our convictions, with evey chance of exchange, which eventually focuses around you.

However. a "Turkish Cypriot", a Cypriot of Turkish origin, whatever his political wants, will eventually see you as an adversary, just as, if not more dangerous to their cause as their "Greek Cypriot" adversery.

A "Greek Cypriot", at least stands for, and declares his belief, you hide behind your brethren to steal from them, as Turkey stole, what they could not have otherwise.

The Republic is not a Greek Cypriot nation. This is something a lot of people seem not to understand.

But you seem to have all of a sudden found your Cypriotness in Marks & Spencers and you continually try to peddle this idea to Turkish Cypriots to try and intice them back into line. Well CTD Turkish Cypriots are very weary of Greek Cypriots and question their true intentions, the trust is non-existent you must have realized this by now?

I do not know why you guys are arguing for stupid thing again.

Every Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot is Cypriot. If Turkish Cypriots and or Greek Cypriots did not feel Cypriot they would not call themselves Turkish Cypriot or Greek Cypriot but rather call themselves Turk or Greek. Just the fact that they do not call this proves that they do feel Cypriot.

But being Cypriot does not mean that you can not be Turkish or Greek ethnic background. Because there is no such thing as Cypriot ethnicity. I have never heard such a thing. There is Cypriot nation but no such thing as Cypriot ethnicity.

People here confuse concept of ethnicity and nationality a lot.

- DP comes and say that anybody that claims to be Turkish Cypriot or Greek Cypriot should leave the island because they can't be Cypriot. He is wrong because anybody that claims to be Turkish Cypriot and/or Greek Cypriot are actually are actually claiming that they are a part of Cypriot nation. But funnily, at the same time he can go on and claim that he is a proud Greek Australian (or Greek Cypriot Australian for that matter it does not make any difference in terms of analogy).

On the other hand Eric comes and claim that there is no such thing as Cypriot, which actually means all the Turkish Cypriots do not exist. Cypriotness is your nationality, Turkishness and Greekness is your ethnicity. Claiming that Turkish Cypriots are not Cypriot means that Turkish Cypriots does not have a nation because huge majority of them are not Turkish nationality, but rather simply Turkish ethnicity.

This is not that hard understand but I guess yo have to first understand that every nation does not have to be a monolithic nation composed of one ethnicity.

And the funny thing two people who does this mistake to much are the ones that lives in a very mixed nations like UK, and Australia. May be it is because of this they make this mistake over and over. May be they yearn for a monolithic nation because they live in those mixed countries. I do not know.
