Hi
I am experimenting with a talkcyprus webcam.
The camera is currently pointing out a window in my house (looking north towards the sea and Turkey).
It can be viewed via the following URL (if you are a logged on forum user)

Great Job Errol: Keep up the good work: All we need is to post up a few more from around the whole island:
This way we can all see what we are missing because of strange way of thinking in the 21st Century:
How far are you from the beach?
If you want an Aussie web cam there is great one at the Yacht club I belong called:
The Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron: If you want I will post it as well:

I have argued (seriously and in vaguely serious places) that one of the ways to mitigate the downsides of a CCTV society (like they have in the UK) is to mandate that all cameras covering public spaces have to be publicaly viewable as well. Techincally pretty easy in the UK really. Imagine if you had real time access the the 100,000s of CCTV images (in UK). Where I lived in London I could have used a camera up the road to check when the bus was comming , so I left my flat door right by the bus stop just as the bus arrived.
It was also a similar thought when I first loaded up google earth. Not just that the 'end point' of google earth would be superfine deatil all over and network speeds that made viewing really instant, but more that ultimately you could do google earth with real time images of anywhere in the world (ok you might need a leo network of camera satelites, but they must be on the way). Now that's cool but if that was normal that 'anyone' could remotely view _anywhere_ on earth in real time, then it would mean some pretty dramatic changes to all sorts of things (though probably not the cyprus problem which oft feels eternal)

I am a couple of kilometers from beach just up a little towards the mountains. From the webcam on a clear day you can just about see the sea and differentiate it from sky in a few small patches. On a really really clear day you can sometimes make out the coast of turkey. I am going to try and find a view from the back / side of the house that faces south towards the mountains and St. Hilarion. I can bascially place the camera anywhere (indoors) I can get a cat5 cable and power too.

I would love to see a list of Cyprus based webcams published and ecourage some more. I must admit if I could find someone with a better location for my camera and it has a suitable network connection to plug it into, I would put my camera there. Must be someone with a good view of kyrenia harbour. |

Incredible Erol! Thanks for letting me have a live glimpse of Cyprus mate!
What would be really cool is if you could get it up somewhere on the mountain around the road to Nicosia so you could get a view of the entire Kyrenia. Somewhere in the Ciklos region (which is the middle of nowhere!). Well, I know it is almost impossible. I was only dreaming.
Thanks a lot again!
PS: What type of webcam you have? |

Its a lan cam really.
I did help my brother put web cameras in his shops. He had had traditional CCTV in one shop and when they broke in they stole the cameras the vhs recorder and all the tapes. Now he has cameras at three shops (and one at his home. following a nasty bulglary there) with the images stored cetntrally and 'off site'. At least thats the theory. In the UK with DSL and the like this just about possible now at a reasonable cost. However hanging the lancam off the end of my 2 way sat connection here in Cyprus, with all it's inherent limits on latency and volume are less than ideal.
I quite like the idea in the summer perhaps of trying to do a live 'broadcast' from the top of st hilarion. I have some currently unsued wifi kit with some directional antennas and stuff. In theroy I should be able to create a link from a laptop with wificard and external antenna pointed at a wifi antenna on the house. If I can do that then I could plug a normal webcam into the laptop and push out images from on top of st hilarion in real time. |
