Hi D,
If you ship your vehicle by RoRo service (Roll On/Roll Off Ferry) you will have to deliver your car to Southampton docks for loading. The vehicle would then be discharged on the quay at Limassol for you to clear through Customs. As long as you have paid full taxes on the vehicle in the U.K. there is no duty applied. You will need to arrange with a local clearing agent in Limassol to assist in the clearance procedure. If you are exporting on a temporary or permenant basis you must notify the DVLA. The cost will be somwhere in the region of £600-700 depending on type and size of vehicle. Most U.K. shippers to Cyprus would arrange the clearance for you.
International Car Shipping :Export Certificate.
Permanent Export.
If you are taking your vehicle out of Great Britain permanently you must notify DVLA. If you have a Registration Document (V5) you can do this by completing section C to show the intended date of export. The V5 should then be returned to DVLA or to a DVLA Local Office. In its place you will receive a Certificate of Permanent Export (V561) as confirmation of your vehicle's registration.
If you have a Registration Certificate (V5C) then you must notify export on the purple section (V5C/4). You must take your Registration Certificate with you as you may have to hand it over to the relevant authority when the vehicle is registered abroad.
Further information on this subject, including advice on taking a vehicle to Northern Ireland, can be found in leaflet V526 'Taking your vehicle out of the country'.
Temporary Exports
If you are taking your vehicle out of the country for less than 12 months you must make sure you take your Registration Document (V5) / Certificate (V5C) with you. If you do not have one, you should apply to a DVLA Local Office on form V62. The Registration Certificate may take up to 14 days to arrive. If you need to travel during this time you will need to apply for Temporary Registration Certificate. You should apply well before your journey, as there could be delays of up to 14 days in issuing the Certificate if you are not already recorded as the vehicle keeper. There is a fee for this service.
You should make sure that you meet any international and national conditions for licensing and taxation.
IMPORTING VEHICLES INTO CYPRUS
1. Community status of the car
Goods in free circulation in the EU move from one member state to another without payment of further Customs import duty. To be exempt from paying further import duty in Cyprus, proof of Community status of the goods must be provided. If you are transferring to Cyprus a car for private use from another member state, you may prove its Community status by producing:-
for a brand new or used vehicle, T2L or Τ2LF document; or
for used vehicles, the number plates and the vehicle registration document issued by previous member state.
The T2L or Τ2LF document can be obtained from the previous member state Customs Service or through your vehicle supplier of the shipper.
In case of failure to provide above mentioned proof of vehicle’s Community status, the importation will be classed as having arrived from a third country and the vehicle will be liable to import duty in addition to the excise duty and VAT.
2. Procedure on arrival of the vehicle in the Republic
Certain goods are subject to excise duty, even if they arrive from another member state of the EU. Motor vehicles, in the following categories, are subject to excise duty:-
saloon type vehicles;
Jeep-type off-road vehicles (4Χ4);
double cabin cars;
vans of tariff heading 87.04 having a gross weight not exceeding 2032 kg and a net cargo space not exceeding 2 m3;
motorcycles having an engine of a cubic capacity exceeding 100 cc.
If you accompany such a vehicle from another member state of the EU, provided it is in free circulation, you may leave the port or airport immediately without any customs procedure.
If your vehicle is brought in unaccompanied by ship, you are required to furnish proof of Community status before you are allowed to remove the vehicle from the port.
However, in both cases, you are required to declare the vehicle to the nearest Customs Station within 24 hours from the date of its arrival using form ED5 (in both Greek and English), in order to pay the excise duty and VAT, if the latter is payable. If a public holiday or weekend follows the date of arrival, you must make the declaration on the first working day after the expiration of the 24 hours deadline.
