Through the grape vine I have heard of a case where a G/C family have sold some of their land on the North. They live in the UK but from what I gather they crossed over to the North, located the necessary officials to deal with the paperwork and have since sold the land. I have never heard of such a case, has anyone else? Rolling Eyes

there have been such rumours , that Greek Cypriots have been contacted in order to sell their land , and the whole process being done "legally" (by legally i mean , that the owner would give up his rights on the land for money , and not legally according to the laws of the Republic of Cyprus).
the rumours say that some people did sell.

but as i ve said : "rumours"

Actually, there have been such rumors for Turkish Cypriots selling their land in South too for years now! As a matter of fact, Rauf Denktas is one of the specualtors of such information that the issue has reached to a massive scale for the Turkish Cypriot side.

The Law provides that T/Cs who evidently emigrated from Cyprus before 1974 can claim their land in the South. Also, T/Cs living in the North can claim their land in the South, provided they move and live in the South for a period of atleast 6 months.(re:Arif Moustafa case)It is not an easy process however, as all applications have to go through the Ministry of Interior and a lot of red tape is involved, especially after cases of fraud involving both G/C and T/C crooks have been brought to light so Government and DLO officials have become increasingly suspicious.
I really dont know of any cases of G/Cs selling their land in the North through normal channels, though i have heard of "private" agreements between G/Cs residing abroad and foreign developers who had "purchased" G/C land from T/Cs to whom the land was "alotted" and then "bought" again for a second time from the real G/C owners through such "private" agreements in order for their investments to take up a more "legal" status and therefore demand a higher price.( as is the case of clean T/C property in the North...)
Generally the vast majority of G/Cs cannot sell land in the North or T/Cs living in the North cannot sell land in the South, unless they decide to move and live in the South for a period of 6 months as i said before...The difference is that the DLO in the South recognizes T/C kocans.I personally have recently obtained fresh kocans from Paphos DLO regarding undivided share property belonging to my late father where T/Cs appear amongst others as share owners.
I should guess, that if it was easy for G/Cs to sell their land in the North, the Cyprus problem would have been solved by now.The free market has strong and peculiar ways of beating politics...

Embargoed just did a seminar on the property issue. It was very illuminating. Learnt alot! There is so much crap and propaganda on either side!

My guess is people on both sides have had enough of politicians pontificating and "the free market economy" is about to step in BIG TIME.

There was a Turkish Cypriot refugee from Vroisha as one case study and Emine Erk (head of Human Rights Foundation and player in Turkish Cypriot Property Commission) read out some example Greek Cypriot case studies. Looks like both sets of refugees becoming increasingly aware post Annan that they are realistically going to be dead before any solution comes, so now looking for best way forward on individual basis (and I know tons of Turkish Cypriots now at least "researching" prospects). And that means breaking out of "national interest" politics. After all, if neither side's politics have helped individuals truly get compensation for losses, harder for their kids to fight when they are dead (this is what Turkish Cypriot refugee said) and Louzidou case has made refugees on both sides sit up & go, "I'm in".

Rumours and threats can't stop this gravy train.. Wink

This is not something new. Sener Levent (Afrika newspaper) has been talking about this for a few years now. He actually went to the "Republic of Cyprus" police with those T/Cs and filed an official complaint against these crooks but the Greek Cypriot police did not do anything despite clear evidence. Sener Levent was complaining about this recently in his newspaper actually.

Mete , Levent has been writing about a T/C crook with connections in the south (he even mentioned the other day in his article in Politis that the wife of this crook works for the CYBC!!)

The Kibris case is a different one, concerning several G/Cs including a muhtar who forged a power of attorney from 2 old T/Cs "authorizing" him to sell their property in the south. They even went as far as "producing" Belgian passpors to "prove" that the owners left Cyprus before 1974 so the sale could be effected much easier.Fortunately the DLO did its job well and the case was uncovered.Due to my profession I happen to know very well how the Cyprus DLO operates and i am confident to say that they are extremely investicative so to speak when dealing with transfer of land even when this is done from parents to children. Still, mistakes do take place and i urge T/Cs who havent already done so, to pay a visit to the DLO of the respective district they or their parents own land in the South and request issuance of fresh title deeds (Kocans).DLO operations are now computerised and such issuance is very easy at a very small fee.The issuance of a fresh kocan is recorded and as a recent entry it gives that much more protection to the owner.

Good to know, I will spread the word, tho my folks do not ever intend to step foot on south side, even though they both from that side (due to past experiences). Can other family members request kocans from DLO for them if they still alive?

If I have the original title deeds for my lands why should be necessary to obtain new ones and why would it be a much more protection? Am I right in saying that deeds are deeds and never run out?

RG, i really dont understand how any T/C whatever their past experiences will not even set foot in the south to carry out a specific business. I have also not understood the G/Cs who will not visit the North for similar reasons. Anyhow, any legal heir of the rightful owner can request a fresh kocan.

You are absolutely right.A fresh entry at the DLO however, brings up the dust so to speak making any potential crook think twice about any fishy business if he knows the rightful owner is interested and vigilant about his property.Plus, the new computerised kocans contain all the new details of the land which often differ from the old ones after the computerisation of the DLO and also accompanied by the relevant topography of the land so the owner or his heirs who probably never saw the actual land can spot it easier.Just take my word for it Eric....I have been trying to bring up to date my late father's kocans for a year now....
