In that battle for democracy, Hrant Dink was on the frontline. Now there is another sign the fight will be fierce.

The "Ergenekon" trial is being held at Silivri prison in Istanbul

Eighty ultra-nationalists are currently on trial just outside Istanbul, accused of plotting to overthrow the government and block democratic reforms.

The prosecutor claims the group - known as Ergenekon - planned a campaign of murder and violence. It was meant to create chaos - and force the military to step in and take control.

Hrant Dink believed Turkey could change. His vision was of a truly democratic republic and the EU accession process was a vital part of that.

Liberal Democrat politician and member of the European Parliament Andrew Duff was in Ankara earlier this week on the occasion of the 62nd meeting of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee. The meeting coincided with the emergence of the original of the military plot which has sent shockwaves throughout the country, with many circles gearing up to stand by democracy and the rule of law in Turkey.

“But if there is any sense of suspicion that the Turkish army is [not] cleansed of corruption and it is not completely faithful to the civilian power here in Turkey, then it will not be trusted by its NATO partners. In the case of a greater degree of transparency and greater degree of cooperation between armed forces and the civilian courts, then I think the outcome is going to be substantially better for Turkey’s democratization process,” Duff continued.

...with the authentication of a plan in writing, it is hoped that the democratic forces in Turkey can turn the tide against the "deep state" and its corrupting influence over what are the founding Principals of Kemal.

Indictment verifies Cage museum plan with concrete evidence

...

The indictment puts forward several pieces of evidence for a frightening planned act of terror of the junta nested within the Naval Forces Command against young students visiting the Koç Museum. According to the plan, several blocks of TNT and other explosives placed at the bottom of a submarine exhibited at the museum would be detonated while a large group of students was visiting the museum...

excuses, and directing blame at others, seems to be a normal tactic from the generals. i especially like the idea that a large cache of explosives were forgotten in a submarine, now a museum piece...

Seven senior military officers have been formally charged in Turkey with attempting to overthrow the government.

They include four admirals, a general and two colonels, some of them retired.

The seven were among more than 40 officers arrested on Monday over an alleged 2003 plot to stir up chaos in Turkey and justify a military coup.

...

The meeting was called after the country's top generals and admirals met at short notice on Tuesday to evaluate what the military called a "serious situation".

'Sledgehammer' plot?

The scale of Monday's operation against the military was unprecedented and increased the tension between the government and the armed forces.
