First of all I would like to greet everyone in the forum, and especially those who were around when I was a active here. I don't plan on returning to active posting; I simply want to put an experience I had with a Turkish newspaper on record.
It's about this article in the English version of Hurriyet:

When I first read it, the article's last paragraph read like this:

This stunned me a bit. "Are they trying to annex Ayia Napa", I thought. So, I sent the newspaper the following complaint:

Dhekelia only borders the area controlled by Turkey's troops, while it includes 3 Greek Cypriot towns, with a total population of over 10000, as well as a major power plant. It also provides the only road access to the Kokkinohoria area south of Famagusta, an area that is inhabited by a further 60000 Greek Cypriots and that includes the vacation towns of Ayia Napa and Protaras.
Putting Dhekelia on your side would effectively cripple the Greek Cypriot economy, turn 70000 people into refugees, and leave 25% of the island without electricity. Please prove that neither your newspaper, nor the Turkish government or the Turkish people wish something like that to happen, and correct this oversight.

To the newspaper's credit, they did make a correction. The paragraph now reads:

Although far from perfect (as it still gives the impression that Dhekelia is in a place far away from the area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus) I think that having a Turkish newspaper take the complaint of a Greek Cypriot seriously is a hopeful sign.
P.S. Is there something wrong with this forum? What's the story with all these irrelevant ads everywhere? |

I doubt that they made the correction based on your suggestions and even if they did, I wouldn't read too much into it resp.
If you could only read Turkish and witness the level of quality that I am suffering from by reading the Turkish newspapers, especially the ones like Hurriyet...
Despite of the fact that there are some exceptionally good journalists (e.g., Can Dundar) and media corporations (e.g., NTV) in Turkey, the general level is annoyingly low and getting the basic facts straight is just a minor detail in this quality assessment.
Good to see you around respy! I really hope to see the forum revived but someone with some free time is to be found first, in order to manage the comeback I think! |
