Hi everybody,
can someone explain to me how this works please?
I don't mean the technical side of it 
I've been offered a place for rent that does have internet by satellite.
They said there is a monthly charge of approx. Eur 50. Thats all I know. 
Do I need any specific hardware?
Are there other charges? If so, are they by time or by volume?
What bandwidth does it normally offer?
Is it stable/reliable?

Hi city,
It works pretty much the same way the setup you use to watch satellite tv. You use a satellite dish with a LNB and a special satellite modem connected to it. So, yes, you certainly need this hardware to access internet via satellite.
Of course, there are companies (which you can find via google) who sell satellite internet packages over different satellites. The fees really depend on the company where the subscription is from.
I think that the landlord already has the necessary equipment and a subscription from a certain company, for otherwise it does not make sense to say that the apartment has satellite internet.
Satellite internet access is useful in places where there is no "suitable" telecom infrastructure with ADSL provided. With the current advances in ADSL technology and moreover, the high costs of satellite internet, I would say that it is basically throwing away your money. I presume you have ADSL in Larnaca already?

Yes, I thought so that the landlord must have the necessary hardware already in place, although I wasn't sure if anything else is required.
So basically I will need to find out what provider he is using in order to verify the details of that service....
In general - is such a connection to the internet reliable/stable?
Ah, and something else: what do they mean when they say its either a one-way or a two-way connection? I mean I could imagine that it means it's either download OR upload, but then again who needs/wants an internet connection that works only in one direction?? *confused*
You are certainly right that Larnaca does have 'proper' broadband coverage (well, sort of, if you call 2MB proper ), but the house in question is in a somewhat remote location, hence the satellite connection. |

The reliability is very much dependent on the proper setup of the hardware city, but assuming that there is nothing wrong with the setup (angle of the dish, any surrounding big trees or buildings around blocking the signals between the dish and satellite etc.), it is should be pretty much stable. Of course, there is also the question of the stability of the provider. You might have the perfect connection between you and the satellite, but if your provider has some problems, you will have connection problems as well.
Internet providers, big internet cafes etc. need a huge amount of down-bandwidth and much much less up-bandwidth. Using certain software, you can use two different (and multiple) channels to provide internet access for your customers, for example, you can use ADSL for up-connections and satellite for down-connections. But of course, using one way connection means that you will have to get the opposite way connection by some other means, otherwise you don't have internet access! So, you must get a two way connection.
Even though it is a remote location, there is a phone line there right? I mean, Cyprus is not that big to have such remote locations with no phone lines  Or is it that, CTA does not provide ADSL for that area?
city, a 2MBit connection is not enough for you? What the hell are you downloading from the internet? |

no, no phoneline. From what I understand CYTA does not provide service in 'undeveloped areas'. And since there is no road going to that house, only a dirt track, I think its classed 'undeveloped'.

If it would deliver 2MB I would not complain, but it never ever does.
In Germany I had 6MB ;o)
Bandwidth is not only about actually downloading stuff more important imo is how long a website needs to display properly or how fast I can navigate from one page to the next. Like in the forum.... it's soooo annoying needing to wait till the next page opens or the reply-box....
It's these sort of things I mean. |
