Cyprus political parties might nomiate Turkish Cypriots for the upocoming election. Would Cypriots vote for Turkish Cypriots to represent them in Europe. That was the question post in phileleftheros newspaper. It would be interesting to see the results.
I personally believe that the Cypriot population matured a lot in the last few years, and more and more progressive people enter the government. The election of Christofias as president brought a lot of possitive momentum towards achieving peace. It would be a pleasant suprise to see a Turkish Cypriot, elected by Greek Cypriots to repsesent them in Europe. What do you think? |

I am afraid that most Turkish Cypriot would see this a stunt or trick designed to create an impression that the Republic of Cyprus represents the interests of the general Turkish Cypriot community. Depressing I know but that is how I think such a move would be seen by many Turkish Cypriot.
What might work better would be for the Republic of Cyprus to allow say 2 MEPs for the north and just let those Turkish Cypriot in the north vote for whoever they want to represent them in the EU parliament. Not very likely though I guess. |

Hi Erol, where have you been.
I would say that the fact that Turkish Cypriot MPs are nominated might be a stunt, if they get elected though, that is not. Imagine if ordinary Greek Cypriots trust a Turkish Cypriot to represent them in EU! |
