| Cyprus aspires for a podium breakthrough in the Olympic sailing regatta given the best ever participation of its sailing team, according to its team leader. |

Cyprus sent four sailors to take part in RS:X men and women, Finn and Laser classes in Qingdao, where the 2008 Olympics sailing regatta will be held.
Among them, Pavlos Kontides, 18, the youngest son of Panayiotis Kontides, and also the two-time gold medalist in the Laser in the International Sailing Federation's (ISAF) Youth Sailing World Championships, is the medal favorite. |
Cheers, again! |

Kontides completed the second day in fifth position, eight points away from the athlete in first place, six points from second and only two from the competitors in positions three and four.
Andreas Cariolou, competing in sailing in the RS:X category, came 14th in the first race, 10th in the second race, 19th in the third race and 10th in the fourth race.
In the women's RS:X category, Gavriela Chatzidamianou dropped from 21st to 22nd place. In her third race she finished 23rd and in the fourth 22nd.
Cypriot weightlifter Demetris Minasides, competing in the 69kg category, lifted 283kg and ranked 22nd among 32 athletes.
Meanwhile, Cypriot archer Elena Mousikou was eliminated from the discipline after being beaten by Japanese Nami Hakayama with a final score of 103-112. |

Kontidis had a great first day ending up 5th with 15 points very very close to the third and fourth who were on 13points. However the second day went badly and he droped 6 positions.
He is on 39points, 16points away from the metals. However it is still possible.
Where I am hoping for gold is in shooting with George Achilleos who is the no1 skit shooter in the world and favourite for gold. Also in shooting we have another chance for a metal with Andri Eleftheriou.
ps This time we don't have a Turkish Cypriot in the team, there were one or two competing in the commonwealth games. Hopefully next time. |

Beijing, 12 August 2008 - Beijing's air quality significantly improved over the last two days, with the sky clearly visible today after rains on 10 and 11 August washed away the pollution across the city. In what could be a sign that the measures taken by the Beijing authorities are working, official data measured an Air Pollution Index (API) of 32 on 12 August. This is far below the benchmark set by the Chinese authorities, whereby an Air Pollution Index of 50 and below is considered excellent.
The news will most likely come as a welcome development for all the athletes as well as for Olympic fans across the world. The United Nations Environment Programme's Beijing team sees this as an indication that measures like the ones taken by the Chinese authorities can make a significant impact.
Some of the air pollution reduction measures that have been adopted by the Chinese authorities for the Olympic Games include the closing down of heavy polluting factories around the city and beyond, a traffic crackdown reducing car traffic around the city by about half, and free use of public transport for people holding tickets to Olympic event or Olympic accreditation.

Cyprus Olympic skeet shooter Antonis Nikolaidis narrowly missed out on a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics on Saturday, when he lost in a final shootout to the Frenchman Anthony Terras. Both competitors finished with a score of 144 points, just behind the gold and silver contenders who both scored 145, setting a new Olympic record.
The bronze medal shootout saw the French holding the medal on the podium, and the Cyprus duo of Nikolaidis and reigning world champion Georgios Achilleos in fourth and fifth place respectively.
The winner of the men’s skeet gold medal was 19 year old Vincent Hancock from the USA. Hancock won the world championships in his first year on the circuit aged just 16, and won in another nail-biting tiebreaker with Tore Brovold from Norway.
Women’s skeet shooter Andri Eleftheriou also missed out on medal glory, but secured a highly respectable seventh place in her final. Athletes Anna Fitidou (pole vault) and Alissa Kallinikou (400 metres) did not qualify for their next rounds.
Cyprus has yet to secure a medal in the Beijing Games, and a pragmatic President Christofias is obviously looking ahead to possible future glory as he returned from Beijing. He sent telegrams of congratulations to Cypriot footballs team Anorthosis, who are just one game away from qualifying for the UEFA Champions league.

"To have three Olympic champions (Antonis Nicolaides, George Achilleos, and Andri Eleftheriou) in the team is a unique success for Cyprus,” he said.
“We are very proud of our Olympic team, they did very well and the Cypriot athletes proved that this was the best Cyprus Olympic team we have ever had," Lazarides added.
On the performance of young Cypriot athletes, such as Pavlos Kontides in sailing and Demetris Minasides in weightlifting, Lazarides expressed optimism about their future and the future of Cyprus athleticism.
