SPURS 5, ARSENAL 1 Laughing Group wave WE BEAT THE SCUM 5 - 1 Group wave Laughing

A place in the Carling Cup final was booked in spectacular style at White Hart Lane as Arsenal were put to the sword by a 5-1 margin.

Jermaine Jenas set the tone in the opening moments and the lead was extended before half-time courtesy of a Nicklas Bendtner own goal. Any thoughts Arsenal had of trimming the advantage early on in the second period were banished when Robbie Keane and Aaron Lennon stunned the visitors further and the icing was very much put on the Wembley cake when Steed Malbranque tapped home the fifth in injury time.

Chelsea or Everton will be in opposition when we make a first visit to the new Wembley Stadium in February.

The atmosphere was humming and on two minutes it turned into a wall of sound after Dimitar Berbatov flicked on into the path of Jenas, who then embarked on a mazy run deep into opposition territory before dispatching a precise low drive beyond the dive of Lukasz Fabianski, off the post and into the net.

It was noisy before kick-off, after that it was rocking.

The goal knocked a bit of the opening minute swagger out of Arsenal, but still they patiently pinged the ball around. Keane employed a considerable degree of trickery to completely outfox Willam Gallas and flicked into the area where Abou Diaby was forced into an athletic clearance.

In the 18th minute the struggling Denilson was replaced by Cesc Fabregas.

Eight minutes later is was double the joy when, off of Jenas' free-kick, Michael Dawson climbed with Bendtner and the ball connected with the head of the big Dane and flew past Fabianski high into the net.

Just before the half hour mark the chest of Jenas set Berbatov free on goal. The striker was hunted down, but you still waited for the net to rattle only for the post to take the impact.

Diaby wrapped his boot around the ball and slammed over the bar on 37 minutes, before Jenas crashed the ball into the sidenetting in stoppage time.

Just a couple of minutes into the second half there was another eruption in the stadium when Lennon set Keane through and the striker kept his composure and fired across Fabianski and into the net at the Paxton Road end. It was goal 101 for Robbie and boy did he enjoy it.

Bendtner really did rattle the bar at the other end and Fabregas was denied by Radek Cerny on the rebound before Malbranque was set through by Keane, but this time Fabianski foiled.

It was party time but the intensity level did not drop. Arsenal had to commit greater numbers forward. It left them a little open on the break and this was exploited to perfection just before the hour.

Lennon exchanged passes with Chimbonda and the full-back pressed on and played inside to Keane. The Irishman did not go for number 102, he switched play into the path of the speeding Lennon, who slotted calmly past Fabianski.

It was about the only thing in the stadium that was calm at that point.

Soon after Keane and Berbatov were replaced by Jermain Defoe and Kevin Boateng. But the next score went to Arsenal when Eduardo prodded in the direction of fellow sub Emmanuel Adebayor and the big striker fired past Cerny to make it 4-1.

Arsenal applied some late pressure but a night that will go down in Spurs history was capped when Jenas broke down the right and squared for Malbranque to tap home. It will be a team in white taking on a team in blue on February 24.

Hi guys..

The greatest night in recent Spurs history. Spanking those Woolwich Wondering usurpers of our ancestral lands in north London.

This article caught my eye...

http://goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=558277

Memory Lane For Hoodoo-Busting Spurs

Last night's 5-1 thrashing of Arsenal was not the first time Spurs have ended a long-standing hoodoo against London rivals in emphatic style. They beat Chelsea by the same score six years ago - also in the second leg of a League Cup semi-final - after a long, long barren spell against the Blues. Graham Lister reflects on that - and the continuing Ramos Revival at White Hart Lane...

Tottenham Hotspur certainly know how to end a hoodoo... even if it does take them several years of punishment before they're ready to hit back. Their breathtaking demolition of Arsenal last night in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final released nine years of hurt at the hands of their hated North London rivals.

You could feel the relief as much as the joy and sheer amazement as Spurs so emphatically routed their tormentors at last. It was the footballing equivalent of a rebel liberation movement finally overthrowing an occupying army and reclaiming their own land.

White Hart Lane was that land, and how it rocked last night. Now Spurs can not only revel in soundly thrashing Arsenal at last, but also relish a Wembley final next month against either Everton or Chelsea. And given the remarkable cup record of manager Juande Ramos, who would bet against them now?

It would be interesting, if uncomfortable, to know how Martin Jol views recent events at the Lane. With the same squad of players as Jol had at his disposal, Ramos has wrought dramatic improvements in a short space of time. They look fitter, faster, hungrier, happier, more committed and certainly more compact.

Players who had appeared to be drifting - notably midfielder Jermain Jenas, who was electrifying against Arsenal - are now suddenly right in the groove, looking purposeful and ambitious and justifying the fees Spurs paid for them.

And against Arsenal, even the oft-derided Tottenham defence looked solid - if not as a rock, then certainly considerably stiffer than the soggy newspaper of earlier this season. What was impressive was the hard work the team were prepared to put in to defend in depth and keep Arsenal away from areas where they could do real harm.

And on the counter-attack, Spurs were devastatingly swift and incisive, carrying real menace every time they broke forward and exposing the Gunners s the side with the serious defensive deficiencies.

On the touchline stood Ramos, dark and impassive, contemplating his work in progress and mentally noting further refinements to be made. On the basis of what he saw last night, he must feel his project is ahead of schedule.

In truth, this performance against Arsenal had been on the cards. It had been coming. From the Gunners' perspective, the accident had been waiting to happen after a couple of near-misses. Whereas Arsenal burst the pretensions of Jol's Tottenham back in September at White Hart Lane with a clinical but thrilling comeback to win 3-1, Spurs were unfortunate to lose 2-1 at the Emirates just before Christmas in the Premier League return.

And they had been very unfortunate not to win on their enemy's home turf two weeks ago, in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final, when they outplayed the hosts but had to settle for a draw after Theo Walcott's late, deflected equaliser.

Last night though, there would be no mistakes: they were determined to put the record straight, prove their pedigree and avenge any injustices they may feel they had to endure in the previous 21 winless clashes against Arsenal.

The result was Tottenham's best against their neighbours since 4th April, 1983 when Keith Burkinshaw's side won 5-0 in the old First Division against Terry Neill's. A quarter of a century later, Spurs fans will be hoping last night was a turning-point - not only in the history of North London derbies, but also in their fortunes this season. One more win in this competition and they will be lifting a trophy for the first time since 1999, when they beat Leicester City at Wembley to win the same Cup - ironically under the management of George Graham, who will forever be remembered as a Gunner.

What a first (part) season for Ramos it would be - to win silverware before all his bags are fully unpacked. The Spaniard clearly has an affinity for cup competitions - or more accurately, an understanding of what it takes to win them. And Arsenal now know, if they didn't already, that they have a worthy adversary at the helm now in N17. One swallow doesn't make the proverbial summer, but Spurs looked positively Seville-like at times last night, in terms of swiftness, style and even swagger.

So while Arsene Wenger rebuilds morale at N5, gets his defenders to start doing the basics again and his strikers to resist internecine warfare, Ramos can watch tonight's other semi-final and start formulating his game plan to tackle either Everton or Chelsea. The one he devised for the Gunners worked a treat.

And assuming Spurs were to meet Chelsea in the Carling Cup final, there is a striking parallel between how Spurs ended their Arsenal hoodoo last night and how they removed the Indian sign hat Chelsea had over them for so long.

In 2002, Tottenham also reached the semi-final of the League Cup (then sponsored by Worthington). Their opponents over the two legs were Chelsea, who had not lost to Spurs home or away for almost as long as anyone could remember. It was the same old story as the Blues won the Stamford Bridge leg 2-1. But then Tottenham - at the 27th attempt in a 12-year winless streak - hammered Claudio Ranieri's Chelsea 5-1 at the Lane.

That was on January 23rd, 2002 - exactly six years ago today. And Gus Poyet - now assistant to Ramos - was in the Tottenham side that savoured that sweet moment. So was Ledley King, while William Gallas - on the beaten side for Arsenal last night - was also in the Chelsea team in 2002. Glenn Hoddle was manager, but he was unable to build on that hoodoo-busting performance by winning the Cup itself. Blackburn Rovers beat them 2-1 in Cardiff. Can Ramos go one better at Wembley?

UNITED 3, SPURS 1

United finally got the better of us after an impressive display at Old Trafford and our FA Cup dreams will go on hold for another year.

Key moments went against us in this fourth round tie. Having taken the lead via Robbie Keane in the 24th minute, United levelled via Carlos Tevez and Jermaine Jenas was denied by the fingertips of Edwin Van der Sar on the stroke of half-time.

Jenas had another chance at 1-1 but then the game changed as Michael Dawson was sent off for deliberate handball, Ronaldo converted from the spot and we were suddenly 2-1 down with 10 men.

Still, Juande Ramos pushed us forward, we ended with three strikers on the pitch and Dimitar Berbatov struck the post with the score at 2-1 with five minutes left. Wide open at the back, Ronaldo clinched it when his shot squirmed under Radek Cerny with two minutes left.

In probably not the ideal game for it to happen, Juande Ramos was forced into defensive changes with Tom Huddlestone and Jamie O'Hara drafted in centrally and left in our back four. Young-Pyo Lee switched to the right.

It was open from the off but it was the United contingent that strongly suspected they had snatched the lead in the fourth minute when Ryan Giggs squared towards Wayne Rooney and the striker's first time effort gave the side netting a good shake.

It was full at Old Trafford and the noise was coming from the travelling Spurs thousands, a good deal noisier than the response to a curious take on Country Roads with a cheesy United spin designed to get the home fans going ahead of kick-off.

Ronaldo was a yard or so wide 14 minutes in before Rooney was forced into goalline action to deny Dimitar Berbatov's precision header from an Aaron Lennon corner.

We only had to wait until the 24th minute for Edwin van der Sar to be picking the ball out of the back of his net. Michael Dawson delivered a superb ball that split the protective wall and set Lennon scurrying away. The winger set over a low searching cross with considerable power that beat the Dutch goalkeeper and was pounced upon by Keane and Spurs voices were filling the Manchester air.

Lennon later had another chance on the break foiled by Van der Sar but Ryan Giggs was then involved in two passages of play, the second leading to a leveller. After blasting over the bar the Welsh international was able to hold up the ball and fend off Lee after a Dawson header in retreat went skywards.

Giggs saw to it that the onrushing Carlos Tevez was able to steer past Cerny and into the corner of the net without obstruction on 38 minutes.

Jenas had the chance to send us in at half-time with the lead restored after Steed Malbranque set him off and running, but he was forced wide and his shot ended up being a little on the tame side.

There was nothing tame about Lennon's run a couple of minutes into the second half, Patrice Evra was left in his wake and the winger ended up chipping for the top corner and the ball ended up skimming the roof of the net. O'Hara then gave Van der Sar some concern from a free-kick that his left foot curled about a foot or so wide of the wall before Jenas was clear on goal again, but this time his finish was wayward after Keane's flick set him free.
Ronaldo nearly roused the home support by drilling into the sidenetting from a Tevez throughball, before Chris Gunter was introduced in place of Lee, slotting into his favoured right-back berth.

In the 67th minute Dawson could not connect with a header inside the area falling backwards under pressure from Rooney following a long clearance from Van der Sar. On his way down Daws' hand made contact with the ball and referee Mr Walton awarded a penalty - converted by Ronaldo - and issued a straight red card to the defender.

From being well in the contest it became ten men and a goal behind, while Kevin Boateng took over from Lennon shortly afterwards.

Jermain Defoe came on in place of the excellent Teemu Tainio with nine minutes left on the clock as we went for it - three up front and the gamble of leaving huge holes at the back.

It almost paid off when Malbranque clipped a cross in from the left corner of the box, Berbatov went for it with Brown and diverted a volley onto the post with Van der Sar motionless.

That would have been no less than we deserved but we then suffered the late blow of conceding a third goal.
