Now, tell me, what has changed recently that made Papadopoulos want to meet Talat? Were there serious preparations for talks that I'm not aware of? Did Turkey suddenly give unlimited power to Talat that I don't know about?
No, none of these happened. The only reason is that there are upcoming elections and Papadopoulos doesn't want to look like he's responsible of the current hopeless situation in Cyprus. |
I can't really agree with this analysis. The main factor I believe is increasing pressure from the international community. For example, EU - NATO relations are being hindered by the continuing impasse in Cypurs. Something had to give in the end in order for things to move on.
Talks for talks sake is pointless and Papadopoulos is right in that not much can be done without the agreement of Turkey. However, by engaging the Turkish Cypriots we keep a dialoge going between us and perhaps the Turkish Cypriot's may gain the strength to be more vocal as to what they want knowing that they have support from their compatriots. This is where Papadopoulos should be winning hearts and minds and acting like a Cypriot president, not a Greek Cypriot one.
But anyway, my point, is that on both sides we are led by a bunch of clowns. Talat is no better I'm afraid. |

What you described is a factor indeed but is it the main factor? That I don't agree. I think it's just too much of a coincidence that Papadopoulos waited all the way to the election time to accept Talat's offer.

I agree completely. But how can you expect a Greek Cypriot nationalist to consider himself "Cypriot" and act like a Cypriot president? That's why we need someone else who can at least pretend to be Cypriot!

Isn't this why we're in today's mess? Stupid politicians combined with blind communities who don't care to keep politicians accountable for what they did (or didn't do) and at the end you have a recipe for disaster. I think politicians share the half of the blame though. |

Stop kidding us Mete! Really, do stop!
As if your leader Talat is not a Turkish Cypriot nationalist! As if your leader is not acting along the same lines that Denktash used to! As if he cares no more about recognition and Turkification of occupied Cyprus, than Denktash used to! As if during your current leader's time, there was no looting of Greek Cypriot properties, just becasue he cares more for a solution and re-unification! Stop kidding us Mete! |

Err, a true Cypriot would be whats required, not a 'pretend' Cypriot.
What we need is someone that has the balls to put his/her money where his/her mouth is and take actions. |

I know that man is not Tpap, i also think Christofias is not that man as in the last 4 years he backed Tpaps policies and showed no balls to be his own man or stand up to Tpap, which only leaves Kasoulides whom i heard is probably the best man to lead all cypriots due to his exstensive years and experience gained in the halls of brussels and EU and has a very pragmatic approach to all situations. |

Mikkie, ask your friend Mete not to tell you how much a Greek Cypriot nationalist Papadopoullos is, but to tell you where his true "Cypriot" leader Talat will be in a week's time, on the 20th of July, and what he will be doing there!
Let me try to first take a lucky guess. He will be attenting a very "Cypriot" military parade and will be making very Cypriot speaches in Attaturk avenue, next to the Generals during their Turkish celebrations of the Greek Cypriots' ethnic cleansing from their north Cypriot homeland and the usurpation of all their properties, and which celebration his "Cypriot" leader will call that of a "peace operation!"
Yes, Talat, the true Cypriot, non Turkish nationalist, and the Donkey's of Gypsou friend!
Banana, are you also going to be there, celebrating together with Talat and other Turkish Cypriots the "peace operation" of your ethnic cleansing and usurpation?

Maybe he should do what Tpap does with the EOKA terrorists (which he is one of them) and give them medals and pensions for killing Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot in there murderous bid to achieve ENOSIS. |

| May be if you hadn't voted a sick anti Turk and an arrogant bigot into office you would have been in your beloved Lapithos by now. Not to menton that the people who delivered Lapithos to Turkey are his close friends (Yiorgatzis etc) who thought that Cyprus should be purely Greek and tried to impose this on all of us. |

Kasoulides is imo a far better choice than Christofias. If anything, he has never been stupid enough to think that Tassos Papadopoulos can promote a solution in Cyprus (other than partition of course). But in the event that things get "desperate" (i.e. if there is a second round between Tassos Papadopoulos and Christofias) then I know that I am voting for Christofias. Like I wrote before, anyone but Tassos Papadopoulos.

The fact remains that in the last 3 years Tassos Papadopoulos has tried very hard to present Talat as another "Denktash" and this in an effort to score a few points in the never ending "blame game". On the other hand, I understand that being like Denktash may not be an entirely bad thing for someone like TPap who is best buddies with Denktash Jr. |

Ah you got me Kifeas, you got me! How foolish of me! I just thought for a second that Papadopoulos considered himself the president of the Republic of Cyprus, you know the internationally recognized, bicommunal Republic of Cyprus that's supposed to represent both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots? I thought you guys told to the whole world and the European Union that what you have in south is the only legal entity in Cyprus and everything else is pseudo and illegal and I thought that's what Talat represented, i.e. a poor pseudo entity in the north that's controlled by an evil military dictatorship unlike the democracy and human rights heaven of the south! But I guess not anymore! I guess what we have in the south and what we have in the north are equally important and the fact that the president of the bicommunal internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus is a Turkish hater Greek nationalist is not worse than the president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus who also tends to be a Turkish Cypriot "nationalist" (this is according to you). You got me me this time, Kifeas!

You know what mikkie, I'd prefer a true Cypriot of course but I kind of gave up on that for a while now. I'll take the one who can at least pretend to be a true Cypriot for now. As the Cypriot community, if we grow up and catch up with the rest of the world in terms of realizing the stupidity that comes along with natioalism, then I'll change my expectations back to "true Cypriot" again but until then, I'll have to settle with what's feasible. |

Mete, there may thousands who put Greek or Turk before the respect we should have for each other, but there are also thousands who love this island more.
The big idea, what we are hoping for, will eventually be absorbed by the political class, they will change themselves, because it is natural, unlike the isolation from each other we have today.
Calm yourself, be diligent, don't despair, be charitable, with grace, it is what we need the most, dialog and goodwill. |

Kifeas,
I'm afraid I have already labelled Talat as just another clown. Justr look at the pathetic excuse he used to cancel the meeting with Papadopoulos! They are talking about having the meeting in August. I guess thats nothing to do with the elections in Turkey then! And Talat has the audacity to put Papadopoulos' offer of talks as an election gimmick. I mean he must think people are stupid if he isn't just as bad. And it also shows that he is just a puppet of Ankara and consequently just a clown in my book.
And of course he will be attenting parades just as he has done last year and the year before. |

Talat doesn't claim to represent Greek Cypriots and he doesn't tell to the whole world that Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is the only legal entity on the island representing all Cypriots. Quite the contrary actually, he stresses the fact that he's the elected presidents of Turkish Cypriots only. Although, giving medals to "terrorists" is wrong no matter where it is done, it's not something you need to concern yourself with because you can say "Go to hell" to Talat and not deal with him in your lifetime since what he has no bearing on your life.
Turkish Cypriots, on the other hand, have to concern themselves with who is the president of the Republic of Cyprus because that guy is going to claim to represent them in the international arena. So I think Turkish Cypriots have a little more reason to be concerned with the Republic of Cyprus president, the one who claims to be legal and real president of the island, to give away medals to murderers! Don't you think?
See, if Papadopoulos admitted the obvious that he doesn't represent Turkish Cypriots, then I could give a damn what he does. As far as I'm concerned, he could give away medals to rapists, wife beaters, lunatics, etc. in addition to the past murderers! |

Ok, let's analyze this a little further. First of all, the meeting that has been cancelled will happen sooner or later. I think Talat wanted to show some kind of reaction to the embargo imposed on the Turkish Cypriots especially in something as trivial as sports, but he cannot use this an a reason to cancel the meeting indefinetely. Mark my words on this.
Having said this, I don't understand how this reaction of Talat (which is rightly so in my opinion) shows so clearly to you that he's a puppet of Ankara. Do you have information that Ankara did not want Talat and Papadopoulos meet after Talat publicly stated that he'd like to meet with Papadopoulos a number of times?
So are you saying that Talat wants to meet with Papadopoulos but Turkey does not allow him and Talat needed an excuse to get out of it and used the football match as an excuse? Do you really believe in this? Couldn't this be a real reaction to the embargo imposed on Turkish Cypriots even in trivial matters like sports?
Don't get me wrong, Talat disappointed me dearly with his inactivity but still though, I think it's just too easy for you to label him a puppet because he wanted to show some reaction to what he considers wrong. A Turkish Cypriot doesn't have to agree with Greek Cypriots 100% in order not to be considered a puppet of Ankara. This is the point I'm trying to make. |
