City, ah I think we have crossed wires! Jbail is in Northern Lebanon, close (ish) to Baalbeck (didn't visit there though) and North of Jounieh. I did visit the Jeita Grotto - it was amazing and I also enjoyed going up to Harissa, the views were great from up there.

There is still so much in Cyprus I have yet to see but they are on my list!

Good for you, city. I was 16 when I left Cyprus 8 years ago so I didn't get to see around Cyprus too much. Hopefully when I return back to Cyprus for good, I'll make those trips as well.

sorry, Mete. But I am sure you will have the opportunity in the future. Or you come for holidays from the States before you return to Cyprus for good.... ;o)

RW thanks for the kind words or support!

City:
First you should of seen what St Hilarion looked like in 1972/73: It was magical and mystical: As for the Frescoes? Ask the Turkish Army what happened: For a start when I went to St Hilarion in 1983 there where goats and other animals all over the castle: There was an old church that had a small sign that said LATIN cathedral when in fact it was a Greek Church:
But hey WAR wasn't meant to be fair: Look at what happened to the Museums in Iraq: Ask the US soldiers WHO where meant to be more civilized than the Turks, so they say:
AS for Bellapais being in GOOD condition: In 1983 I asked some British ladies living in Bellapais how in the world did it survive?
There answer was simple:
The said IF we British women didn't all jump in front of the Turkish Army and also looked ourselves in the Church it would of been destroyed like ALL the other Churches in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus:
So you see City next time you go to Bellapais TALK with some of the British there and learn the Truth!
They actually stayed there protecting Bellapais for a mo9nth UNTIL they had guarantee from the Turkish Military leaders THAT Bellapais would be spared!
Leyla if you are free one day we should go around the island and try to document some of the monoliths and let see IF they are similar to the ones in MALTA!
Let make it our assignment of the month!
cheers
PS Xenos:
Don't forget I have my classes starting up soon: Politics for Dummies!
For you my friend it will be for FREE!

dp, I didn't speak about what happened in the past. Maybe the British saved the ancient places in the early 70ies, but you said:

PS It is also a very big shame that the Turks do not respect the ancient ruins in the NTH!

Judging by the condition of the places today I would say the Turks/Turkish Cypriots do take care of them. I don't know when you've been there the last time. Probably in the early 80ies as I understand your posts.

City I was told that the Turks bulldozed over an ancient Neolithic settlement in Apostles Andreas to put up a flag pole just a few weeks ago:
They also subdivided blocks of land in another ancient site near Ayia Irini:
My point is that EVERYONE should have repect for the ancient sites because they where here before Jesus and Mohamed:
cheers
PS Let get a site for Monoliths!

These incidents, if true, in my opinion, represent Crimes against Humanity.

These are acts of willful Ignorance because it is known, how important this Patrimony is to all people.

RW I agree with they should be charged!
BUT who can we turn too to administrate this? The UN? or EU?
Thanks God the only way to secure some of these precious sites is to get them on the World Heritage listing BUT that didn't mean a damn to the Taliban in Afghanistan who destroyed the Buddhist Statues and also to the US forces who ransacked Iraq's ancient heritage!

I would also like to add one more about the Turkish Military in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus: In 1972 there was a beautiful 1200 year old church on the Pentadacitlos Ranges called Ayios Elias: But where is it now?
The Turkish Army bulldozed half of it for there military Radar system and few years later Denktash bulldozed the rest to put up the BARAK radio tower!
Some called it a security issue BUT I would call it a disrespect for PAST History!
cheers
PS Please NOTE! After Heavy Rock Music & Scuba Diving........ Archeology was high on my list!
I was also upset and stated this many times to MANY PEOPLE when some idiot decided to put up NEON advertising lights on the Mosque in Lanacca near the castle: Thank God common sense prevailed and they took that Shit down and turned the Mosque into a place of worship again!
cheers again!

Pressure from either or both the UN and the EU will certainly promote awareness of the impotance of these sites to all people everywhere. They are in essence, not "Greek" or "Turkish", they are a part of the Patrimony that adds substance to the lives of all living people, but more importantly for the people to come.
