Hi Glitterygert and welcome to the forum.
We have a range of members on this forum, Cypriots from north anbd south, half cypriots from both sides (like myslef) and non cypriots as well either living in CYprus or abroad and with an interest in Cyprus.
I know quite few 'expat brits' living in the North ;)
I am sure you will be welcome on the forums by all. You should know I guess that for many Greek Cypriot the issue of use and most especially development and sale (especially to non Cypriots) of land / property that was Greek Cypriot owned and controlled pre 74 is a very sensative and important issue. So you may get questions as to what the status of the land your apartment is built on was pre 74.
Anyway welcome to the forums and I hope you find your membership here both enjoyable and useful. |

thanks erolz, I do understand about the land issues, and I try to see everybody's point of view, my understanding is that the apartments are built on exchange land it is not a very big complex I am traveling to nc on the 20th September. It is such a lovely place, and such lovely people, I have the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus blues |

Welcome glitterygert,
hope you enjoy the forum...we may seem scary...but were all good here!! (even us Greek Cypriots who may jump at you with the whole land thing)
Hope the 'exchanged land' is all legit...for your own sake, it would be so crap if you had spent money for you to lose it in a solution. |

| sorry if I spelled your name wrong, I too hope we are right about the land, I have great respect for both sides of the island, and would never take advantage knowingly, we will do our best to make sure it is exchange land. |

Hi Glitterygert,
Since I sense some degree of misconception on your behalf regarding the status of Greek Cypriot properties in the north, I would like to bring to your attention that there is no such thing like an agreed “exchange” of land. This term and /or status of properties in the north being treated as an “exchanged land” is a purely Turkish Cypriot unilateral invention and it is not accepted by the Greek Cypriots, since, as I said, they never agreed to such a procedure and they (we) still regard these properties to be legally theirs. Various relevant European Court of Human Rights rulings have re-confirmed the Greek Cypriot’s property rights in the north, irrespective of whether they have been regarded by the Turkish Cypriots as an exchange land or not. The Republic of Cyprus continues to regard the Turkish Cypriot properties that were left behind in the south to legally belong to the Turkish Cypriots and to this respect it did not allow the ownership acquisition and /or trading of these properties to any Greek Cypriot, be it a refugee from the north or not, nor it allowed their sale to any foreigners. The only exception in which some (very few) Turkish Cypriot properties in the south were affected is due to expropriation for the construction of government funded public benefit projects (roads, airports, hospitals, etc) and this affected both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot properties alike. |
