DP your comments above are ridiculous, because rightly or wrongly Marcos is Greek and feels Greek. Marcos is from Cyprus, nevertheless his nationality is Greek. Just like thousands of Cypriots celebrated Greece's win of Euro 2004, similarly many Greeks cheer up Marcos.

When he was in Melbourne 3 weeks ago, he didn't go to the Cyprus community, he went to the Hellas fun club where they organised a BBQ for him, he went there and at times he was holding a Greek flag and singing along "Ellas ole, Kypros ole, enosis ole, enosis ole, enosis ole". Why? because he feels that way.

ps. I guess similar celebrations would occur in Turkey, if a Turkish Cypriot was playing.

pps. What is also ridiculous I think and the other extreme is going to tennis chanting nationalistic anthems (totally out of place). I went last year to a game with a Turkish Cypriot friend and he said, "I am out of here, I don't mind Greek flags and chanting, but singing political slogans, NO! I am going home" I felt really bad that day, embarased, ashamed.

So you say that Marcos has a Cypriot passport therefore he is Greek?
Ask the EU what they think?
cheers
PS Marcos spent most of his time in Sydney and only came to Melb a few days before the match:
He was here with his Godmother who is a good friend of mine!
PS It is the 100s of Cypriots who celebrated Greece win that divided Cyprus!
BUT then again there are Cypriots who celebrate Turkeys WIN, Britain Wins and maybe one day Australia win!
The good thing with 2007!
EOKA B cant send there henchmen out to get the any Cypriots who don't want to be Greeks BUT only true Cypriots!
OR can they?

I am saying that you cannot impose to someone how he/she should feel. Home is were you feel you belong (place), similarly nationality is which you feel you belong (culture).

My nationality is Greek, my home is Cyprus.

Obviously you feel your Cypriot, good on you mate, well others don't, get over it, respect it if you want others to respect your Cypriotness.

ps I don't support EOKA B actions, i never did.

pps. imo true Cypriots are not just those who feel Cypriot and nothing else but also those who love Cyprus regardless of ethnic background, Turkish, Greek whatever

Hey the Americans, Australians, Canadians and New Zealanders all speak English BUT are they British?
Many are Church of England or Anglican BUT are they English?

I know what YOU say: You speak Greek and are Greek Orthodox so therefore we are Greeks:
BUT when Cyprus got it independence in 1960 as Cypriots surely you must respect that too?

Also by saying you are Greek does not bother me: It is only when you live in Cyprus and say you are NOT Cypriot BUT Greek or you are not Cypriot BUT Turk that is when the country is divided:

At the moment MOST have not fully understood the meaning of the EU!
In the EU no one gives a shit about language , religion OR where the hell you came from: You are Europeans from Greece, Cyprus and maybe in 100 years Turkey!
cheers

So your point is that the only bonds Greek Cypriots have with Greece and Turkish Cypriots with Turkey are language and religion!

By your definition, you live in Australia, you have an Oz passport (I assume) so you are Australian, neither Cypriot nor Greek.

And I would like to thank theses people for dividing Cyprus and helping to make it the MESS it is today!
Thank You!
cheers

No Stavri, your ethnic or ethno_cultural identity is Greek, or better Greek Cypriot -to the extent that it differs (and it does nevertheless slightly differ) from that of other ethnic Greek identities elsewhere; but your nationality is Cypriot!

Do not confuse the terms. In spoken Greek, many people use the term “ethnicotis” (out of which the English term ethnicity derived,) interchangeably, to both mean ethnicity and nationality. However, in English there is a distinction between the two terms. Ethnic(ity) refers to someone’s distinctive cultural and /or racial characteristics -“blood line,” language, religion, customs, etc-, while nationality relates or refers to someone’s citizenship. The corresponding term of nationality in Greek would be “Ithagenia,” or “ipikootita” for the term citizenship. The term ethnicity, in English, has more of an anthropological science connotation, while the term nationality has more of a political and /or a legal one.

Thanks Kifreas for your explanation!
Stavrizatz I respect every ones nationality BUT when someone wants to reap in all the benefits the EU entrusts on the Cypriot people and then says we are NOT Cypriots BUT Greeks and Turks then that is pathetic!
It is the same as many Turkish Cypriot who want ALL the benefits (Money ect) from the EU BUT say they are Turkish and not Cypriots!
You cant have your cake and eat it too!
How can anyone UN or EU help the people of Cyprus when we ourselves don't know WHO the hell we are?
What will the EU address US as?
Welcome to the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot and the British Cypriots and the Aussie Cypriots and the Armenian Cypriots and the Russian Cypriots of Cyprus!!!!!!!
cheers

thanks Kifeas for the clarification, then I was refering to ethnicity.

Ok so in OZ you fair dinkum aussie but in Cyprus your Cypriot, fair enough.

However I have a more complicated puzzle for u!
My girlfriend has 3/4 Belgian background and 1/4 Greel, she was born in africa and she grew up in Australia. She has four passports and if she gets married to me she will most likely get a Cypriot passport too. Q1What nationality is she? Q2 What ethnicity is she?

cheers

ps I am not bullshitisg

Your girlfriend has not got the problems you have!
It is when you have ONE identity ONLY and live in a country under another assumed identity that causes problems!
Let me put it simple so everyone can understand!

She take the identity of the passport she hold and the country of the passport!

Yet many hold the Cypriot passport BUT say they are Greeks and Turks!

As for her Cypriot passport?
When she get it what will it say on it?
Nationality.................Correct?
And the Nationality is Cypriot!
I don't think is says Greek Cypriot or Turkish Cypriot!
I don't think is says Language?
I don't think is says Religion?
Why because the EU is NOT interested in all that crap!
cheers
PS Maybe the Republic of Cyprus should have a passport that has blank spaces and YOU and others can fill out what ever they want in their passports!
BUT there is one SMALL problem!
The EU wont accept these passports with assumed identities in them!
