Borat spoof film banned in Russia
Russia has banned the hit comedy film, Borat, which has been accused of poking fun at Moscow's neighbour and close ally Kazakhstan.
The film stars British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen as a spoof reporter on a trip to the US.
A senior official at Russia's culture ministry has told the BBC it will not provide a distribution licence.
The film has described as a "mockumentary" which follows Mr Cohen's travel across the US.
On the way, he has a series of real life encounters with unsuspecting Americans in which he makes the most outrageous, sexist, racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic comments.
'Not amused'
It has proved to be a big hit in the US and Europe, where it opened last weekend.
Some reviewers have described it as "hysterical" and "the funniest film of the year".
But there are others, not least the government of Kazakhstan who say it is deeply offensive.
One Kazakh diplomat says that the depiction of his country as violent, primitive and oppressive bears no resemblance to reality.
And it seems the Russian authorities are also not amused.
A culture ministry official in Moscow told the BBC it had refused to issue a distribution licence because the film could potentially humiliate different ethnic groups and religions.
The official would not give any further details, except to say the distributors had the right to appeal against the government's decision. |

I saw the film last week and its shockingly funny. Seems like Borats going to be paying for this movie for a long time to come though.....

The unwitting 'cast' of the Borat movie are queuing up to sue Sacha Baron Cohen for the way they were portrayed. The critically acclaimed film, that followed the fictitious Kazakhstani reporter as he exposed racism, sexism and ignorance across America, has made over $200 million since its release.
But it now seems that some of the profits will be worn away by angry cast members filing lawsuits against the star. Most are claiming that they were not made aware of how they would be portrayed. These are the unfortunate 'victims' who have accused Kazakhstan's most famous reporter of foul play.
The Villagers Of Glod…
Borat's Kazakhstani village as it appeared in the film was actually a remote Romanian village called Glod. The villagers who appeared in the movie claim to have been paid a mere £3 each by the production, completely unaware that they were about to be portrayed as incestuous primitives. Having gathered the evidence against Cohen, the villagers' attorneys have filed for $30 million in damages.
Dharma Arthur
Ms Arthur is the unfortunate Television producer who unwittingly allowed Borat to appear on her news show where he humiliated a presenter before disrupting a weather report. Ms Arthur was dismissed from the studio as a result of the incident. “I spiralled into depression, and before I could recover, I was released from my contract," she wrote in a letter to Newsweek Magazine. "It took me three months to find another job, and now I'm thousands of dollars in debt and struggling to keep my house out of foreclosure.” She has yet to press charges.

Driving Instructor Michael Psenicska
“I don’t care what I signed," says the unfortunate instructor taken for a ride by Borat. Although he was paid 500 dollars for his appearance and signed a release form, Mr Psenicska claims he was put in danger by Cohen, who drove on the wrong side of the road during his lesson. "I know what they did to me and it’s just not fair. Borat has not heard the end of me,” he says.
Frat Boys
Also filing a lawsuit against Cohen are two of the three drunken members of the Kappa Sigma fraternity who picked Borat up in their RV and went on to drunkenly make sexist and racist comments. They claim they have since been made, "the object of ridicule, humiliation, mental anguish and emotional and physical distress." Says the boys' lawyer, "If you watch the movie, one of them can barely keep his eyes open. It's pretty obvious to me that these guys did not know what they were getting into."
Cindy Streit
The etiquette coach whose dinner party is wrecked by Borat has lodged a complaint with the California Attorney General. "I had taught him to excuse himself. He did that correctly and went upstairs," Streit told The Associated Press. "The next thing that happened is that he came down the stairs holding this plastic bag with whatever was in it." Anyone who's seen the movie will know it wasn't a pleasant scene… |
