| Today it is a raucous, bordering on the erotic, couple dance between men and women where the dancers face one another. Hands are held in the upright position about eye level, fingers snapped to the beat of the music, hips swaying. |
Yup, that sounds like the general wedding 'syrto dance'...
Although I'm slightly intrigued by the 'bordering on the erotic' part...
I found this video clip on youtube, I got slightly confused actually when I first watched it, because the music and steps are Cypriot, but the costumes come from various parts of Greece....They'd probably been dancing a dance from Greece before hand...

My greek/cypiot dancing is a bit rusty ( i used to do it loads at greek school) since i havent done it for a while, but there was at least 3 or 4 different dances/set of moves that were in that one piece....very odd indeed. Definately a medley of some sort methinks. i loved doing greek/cypriot dancing....my uncle(who tought me) was a real purist and hated all the 'commercial' plate smashing crap and bastardised dances that people were/aredoing so that it looks good. We learnt more traditional dances...i loved pontic ones...especially tik! lol and kalamatiano from the islands(i used to lead it :> ) |
Aaahh...the good old days of Greek School....I loved dancing, when I was a lot younger they used to hold a dance group after school for an hour, my dad used to work at the Greek School and as he usually had a meeting, me and my cousins used to go. At first it was just something to do whilst we waited for my dad, but then it became a real passion of mine...although the guy (Mario, genius! ) left after a few years. After that we only really danced for festivals or end of year plays, although they did manage to get a new dance teacher a few years later, but no one could compare to Mario..(did I mention the guy was a genius?? ). I actually really miss dancing regularly...I would join a dance group, but there's not really that many around B'ham way...oh well...
Lol...oh you should be very proud of yourself Dhavlos, leading the 'Kalamatianos' is certainly an Honor...it shows your dance teacher trusts you to keep the rhythm as well as keeping everyone in check... . For some reason the 'Kalamatianos' has now become part of the 'traditional' Cypriot wedding dances, reserved for when the 'koumeres' all dance together...I wonder why that is....Hmmm.... |
