The wines of Cyprus were actually quite famous throughout latter Byzantine/Early Ottoman times. When the Rus settled in what is today Russia around the Black Sea, the Byzantines had a massive trade in Cypriot Wines with them, which were famed for their strength, and also some kind of 'Proto-Ouzo' (which is discussed in Dalby's 'Flavours of Byzantium'), perhaps this is where the Russian love of Vodka comes from? |
