Sharing an article straight from Cyprus Weekly:

Greek and T/Cyps show remarkable similiarities in values and beliefs a survey suggests. Both list the family as very important in their lives with friends taking second place and working taking third. They share concern about local environmental problems though Turkish Cypriots fear problems are more serious than their Greek Cypriot counterparts.

Most place themselves at the centre of the political spectrum. An equal number of Greek and T/Cypriots place themselves on the Left but more Greek Cypriots and T/Cypriots say they belong to the right.

There is agreement that living in a country that is democratically governed is absolutely improtant. However Greek Cypriots seem more confident that the country is being governed democratically than T/Cypriots.

Greek Cypriots have slightly more confidence in religious institutions but T/Cypriots trust the armed forces more than Greek Cypriots.

Greek Cypriots identify more with the EU than T/Cypriots. Both communities consider cheating on taxes and accepting bribes as unjustifiable. They also dissaprove of abortion. Greek Cypriots are more tolerant to divorce than T/Cypriots.

Similiar after all? .. Neutral

I personally feel more at home in the company of T/Cs than in that of any other people including mainlandd Greeks, especially when the zivania starts flowing down Twisted Evil
Whatever anybody says , there is still a caltural bond there which is atleast as strong as any political or religious difference.

I feel the same: We are one: It is only a FEW nuts (EOKA B & TMT) who make it difficult for the majority because they can not admit they are independent Cypriots:
Also we are not like GREEKS & TURKISH mainland who I personally think that most of THEM look down at Cypriots as if we are some sort of uneducated bums or NERDS:
BUT as for the Turkish Cypriot & the Greek Cypriot without outside interference we are a great bunch of common sense people who put family first, respect and Honor:
OUR only minor problem maybe is we brag:
I have the biggest tomato:
I have the biggest Cucumber:
I caught the biggest fish:
I have 100s of girlfriends ect:
The only thing I Can SAY about this is!
IT TRUE! ALL TRUE!
Crikey!
Want to see my cucumber! I have the biggest one it is so big it goes through 2 time zones:
My girlfriend has the biggest melons!
And my wife has the biggest radish!
MY mother on law! She has the biggest ZAMBOURA!
My father in law the biggest: KOULOUMBRA!
cheers my Cypriot friends:

i dont know how they measured left or right partisan politics in the north as they are bit complicated there. personally i think turkish cypriots are more left or centre-left than greek cypriots, esp if we consider the share of votes for ctp, bdh, etc. maybe im wrong but i think ctp is very strong among t/c nowadays (less so with settlers who vote ubp or dp), and t/cys have always had a good relationship with akel. i think one of the reasons papadopoulos was against the annan plan was to keep his grip on power like all cypriot politicians. he knew that if cyprus was reunited t/cys would vote for akel, he recognised this risk that in the first presidential elections akel would win with combined greek and turkish cypriot votes.

Quote:
Cyprus is an important contribution to the WVS because it is a divided island with multi-ethnic and multi-religious communities that have experienced the horror of civil war. Given its long history of inter-communal conflict, Cyprus presents the opportunity to test theoretically important hypotheses surrounding the clash of civilisations, post-industrial values versus ethnic and religious nationalism, the impact of the protracted conflict of war on people’s lives, the colonial/post-colonial/civil war environment’s effect on values and beliefs and the effect of external involvement by outside powers on the people.

This is from the Cyprus mail article mentioned in Dhavlos' post.
So you can go to bed peacefully tonight, my compatriots,in the knowledge that "the horrors of civil war" we were subjected to will make "an important contribution" to the WVS (go to the link to find out what this is please).Oh,and we will also be good subjects to study "the impact of protracted conflict of war on people's lives".
Do you all feel better now??? Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Why are you so sad Birk?
Isn’t it great to be regarded a guinea pig and thus be able to contribute in this way to the further development of social sciences? After all, Cyprus's name will remain registered in the annals of science, at last for at least one thing. Wink
