| It's such a tragedy The last time I went to Beirut I remember those sandy beaches being packed with happy people enjoying the sun and my very good friends were so proud to show me around and explain how far the country had come in the last 15 years - only for it all to be destroyed once more.. |

tell me about it! I was there in 2001 (or 2002?) and it was amazing how much had been achieved and how nice and beautiful the city had been rebuild and slowly the scars of the war were vanishing. |

I know.. It's a disaster... Did you ever get up to where the statue of Harissa stands looking down over the whole of the coast? I dread to think what the view is now.. |

Yes, I think I've been there.
And I've also been to Haifa and up to Mount Carmel there and I also dread to think what the view there is now....
Why is it that always the 'normal' people have to suffer the most? |

On the 15th of July, Israeli army shot down an electricity plant in Lebanon, which resulted with approximately 35000 tonnes of petrol leaking into the Lebanese shores in Mediterranean. According to the environmental organization `Friends of Earth', the waste petrol is moving towards the southern coastline of Turkey.
Environmental organizations warn that the waste petrol could reach the Turkish coastline in a week the earliest, where the waste could reach the shores of Cyprus at any moment!
Greenpeace warned that the Mediterranean sea is facing the biggest environmental threat ever. It was not possible to clean the waste petrol in the Lebanese shores before because of the Israeli siege.

My friend i don't mean to be disrespectfull but their are dozen's of innocent people being killed everyday in lebenon, so i hardly think a bit of petrol that leaked into the sea is very important  |

And?
What makes you think that caring about the environment must be mutually exclusive with caring about the innocent perished lives? Especially when you consider the fact that that "a bit of petrol" (35000 tonnes!!) is going to reach our tiny Cyprus and this is a forum talking about the Cyprus related problems?
Don't worry my friend, Cypriots are generally non-materialistic people anyways, so you do not need to over-emphasize this about yourself. We know, you care about the people, and so do we... |

Yes the enviroment is very important but the live's of thousand's if not hundred's of thousand's are a little higher on the thought scale. |

I am not offended Ibo.
However, I have no idea what you are trying to tell me. Noone in this thread is saying that the environmental issues are more important than the lost human lives. So what is the message that you are trying to give by your posts? We are already in agreement on the issue that you bring up! And I do not know what made you think that I or anyone else thinks otherwise.

No definately not, that is why we are contributing to the forum, it was just me watching the suffering on the new,s and then that was all that was on my mind and maybe i have posted mistakenly due to my high emotions on the lebannon crisis, i am deeply sorry i should have posted my reply somewhere else and not here, i just saw the title of the thread and only saw Middle East in my Blindness, My Blood boiling has blinded me Slightly |

Of course they won't..and what is going to happen in the colder months without fuel? I also read an account recently where a dairy farm had been annihilated...don't tell me, the cows are highly sophisticated missile launchers expertly modified by Hezbollah? Who is terrorising who right now? |
