They didn't so much develop, as throw up facilities with no thought as to how they'd use them afterwards. |

I was talking about the 'developing talent' part...
The Greeks decided to develop (some of) it using rather unorthodox (as in illegal) methods... It's just really unfair to all those law-abiding Greek athletes who'll always carry that stain around, both on their own image and on their medals... |

Funny how she came from nowhere to win at the Olympics and has been 'injured' ever since... |

Hahahaha
Yeah, not just her, let's not forget the Kenteris-Thanou-Sabanis shenanigans... It's been covered up quite effectively, but it's common ('alleged', of course) knowledge that the Greek State has been supporting the whole 'talent development' program, led by the infamous Christos Tzekos - Kenteris's and Thanou's trainer. They've all been in on it all along, ever since they managed to win the 2004 Olympics (1997, was it?). |

Somehow I can't see British official policy sanctioning the use of performance-enhancing drugs by our athletes. To be honest, with the woeful performance of British athletes in Finland during the last two weeks, if such a policy exists, it's not working!
At the Olympics, most of Britain's medals come not from track-and-field but from events like sailing, cycling, shooting etc. |

I mean that the Greek State (obviously, those responsible for the Athletic Development program) knew of, if not devised and supported, the use of 'performance-enhancing drugs' (as moose so eloquently put it) and chose to do nothing about it. There (allegedly) was a secret development plan, under the name 'Korivos Plan':
| Quote: |
There are also reports that several years ago, Tzekos proposed to the former Greek government a secret programme, estimated to cost €6 million, for using banned substances to help Greek athletes win medals. He is alleged to have promised the government that these drugs would not be detected and offered to build labs.
The reports claimed that the code name of Tzekos's plan was Koribos, which was the name of the man who won the first ever Olympic event in the foot race in 776 BC. The government rejected the plan, said Lianis. |

I believe the games will be hosted successfully (meaning all goes well from an organisational point of view etc), but financially it will do London not any good.
I well remember that that was one of the main reasons why we did not want the Olympics in Berlin back in 2000, cause we thought that money could be spend much better to improve the city. |
