| I saw an MTV camera filming away in the police station. You should look up the Turkish Cypriot press tomorrow and please inform us if the incident was reported. |

| The story is reported in all Greek Cypriot newspapers today. Three cars were searched, two driven by women and one by a man. They found copies of passports of Greek Cypriots, letters to the Commission for Compensations and topographical sketches. Also, always according to the police statement, they found plans for the construction of a hotel in Kyreneia and papers concerning a company that deals with property development. The papers were confiscated and the six people involved were released. |

If they are guilty of a crime, they should be punished.

Irish businessman warned over north property brochures
By Leo Leonidou
AN IRISH businessman was let off with a warning after customs officials at the Ayios Dhometios crossing point discovered brochures advertising properties for sale in the north during a routine search.
The incident, on Sunday afternoon, was the fourth similar one in 24 hours, as the unnamed man was crossing from the occupied areas.
Under the law, such brochures are classified as illegal and they were immediately confiscated, with the man allowed to go on his way.
The Irishman was in a Turkish Cypriot taxi en route to Larnaca Airport at the time.
Ciaran Dooly, acting Charg? d’Affaires at the Irish Embassy in Nicosia yesterday told the Cyprus Mail that, “specific advice on these brochures is not issued to our nationals, who should make themselves aware of the law. However, if somebody calls us inquiring about what to do, we would advise them to follow the guidelines set down by the Cyprus government.”
A police spokesman said that customs officers at the crossing point “have the right to stop and search every vehicle and pedestrian entering the Republic from the occupied areas, regardless of their nationality.”
Such property brochures are readily available everywhere in the north, whether in hotels, car rental agencies or estate agents’ offices.
According to the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office website: “Before purchasing property anywhere in Cyprus you are strongly advised to seek qualified legal advice from a source that is independent from the seller.
“Property issues are closely linked to the political situation. There are a number of potential practical, financial and legal implications, particularly for those considering buying property in the north. These relate to the non-recognition of the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’, the suspension of EU law in northern Cyprus, the possible consequences for property of a future settlement, and the many thousands of claims to ownership from people displaced in 1974. There is also a risk that purchasers would face legal proceedings in the courts of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as attempts to enforce judgments from the courts of the Republic of Cyprus elsewhere in the EU, including the UK.
“Separately, potential purchasers should also ensure that they are fully aware of the specific rules imposed by the administration on foreigners purchasing property in the north including the requirement to obtain consent to the transfer of property.”

Next time he'll just use the Ercan Airport in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus so he don't have to cross the border and be harrased. |
