Ok!
It came down this morning for unknown yet reasons while they were testing some upgraded systems on it. It was one of the 12 stationed in pafos and the Russians will replace it for free because it was one of their pilots that was flying it. |

Kifeas, are you sure about this? The Russians are known for selling cheap, in some cases relativley high quality millitary equipment, but one thing they are NOT famous for is maintainance or generally anything involving support after their money has been paid. Turkey experienced this in the 90's and so has greece with the S-300 where the russians at one point 'forgot' the continous training clause of the contract. According to the below article of Cyprus-mail, the russian instructor killed was hired on a contract, it wasnt part of the original contract, and their is no indiciation of who was flying the chopper as both cockpits had joysticks. I really doubt you are getting a new helicopter for free, unless you sue the private company you hired that instructor from, in Russia and they pay you the amount for the helicopter and compensation for the family. Quite frankly i really dont see any of the above happening. Here is the article from Cyprus weekly:
Two die in helicopter crash
By Menelaos Hadjicostis
A known design deficiency possibly combined with pilot misjudgement could explain why one of the National Guard’s Russian-made Mil Mi-35 helicopters crashed east of Paphos, killing a Cypriot trainee airman and his Russian instructor.
The bulky and heavy attack helicopter - whose original design dates back to 1969 – is known for its high speed and lethal tank-busting arsenal, but is notorious for its lack of maneuverability and tendency to lose lift in tight, banking turns.
Online aviation sources consistently underscore that the Mi-24 ‘Hind" – of which the Mi-35 is the updated export version – can "roll alarmingly" in a tight turn.
Apparently in a banking turn, the dropped wing loses lift which tends to flip the helicopter over onto its back.
Small wings on either side the Mi-35 serve the dual purpose of acting as weapons platforms and providing additional lift for the helicopter while in flight.
This is consistent with eyewitness accounts of the helicopter failing to parry what was described as an "evasive manoeuvre" and of crashing upside-down.
Eyewitness Vangelis Mavronikolas was quoted as saying that he saw the helicopter attempting, but failing to complete a 360-degree turn.
The ‘lost lift’ theory is bolstered by the fact that the two pilots had not transmitted a ‘mayday’ alert to military air traffic controllers. That seems to rule out a mechanical malfunction as the primary cause of the crash.
Defence Minister Phivos Klokkaris said the specific helicopter had never experienced a mechanical problem in its history with the National Guard’s Air Wing.
"This helicopter was in proper working order and had undergone its scheduled maintenance checks," Klokkaris told a news conference.
Flight Lieutenant Andreas Papasozomenos, 31 and Mil helicopter instructor Group Captain Yuri Oleynik, 46, took off from the ‘Andreas Papandreou’ air base shortly after 0900 Wednesday for a routine training flight with a second Mi-35.
The helicopter went down in an open field at 0918 some 300 metres from the Larnaca-Paphos highway in the Ayia Marinouda area as Papasozomenos was undergoing training.
The crash touched off a blaze that schorched wild brush for several dozen metres around the site.
Fire crews sped to the scene and quickly put out the blaze.
Nothing remained of the helicopter but a charred hulk of twisted metal.
Defence Ministry officials said Oleunik’s dismembered body was found lying outside the crushed cockpit, while the charred remains of Papasozomenos had to be pulled out of the wreckage.
Witnesses said it was a miracle the helicopter had not come down on the highway.
"It was over our car, we tried to slow down. We were scared it would drop on us, " motorist Liana Christodoulou told state TV.
"We saw it crash in a nearby field. It was tragic."
It’s unclear who was flying the helicopter at the time of the crash, but Klokkaris suggested it could have been either Papasozomenos or Oleynik since the aicraft has controls in both of its cockpits.
Klokkaris evaded elaborating on eyewitness accounts that the helicopter was engaging in evasive manoeuvres just before the crash, saying the instructor and trainee were following a pre-determined training template over an area designated for such flights.
"There is a training programme which has been established and outlines procedures and activities which are followed in this training situation," said Klokkaris.
The helicopter’s flight data recorder has been recovered from the wreckage and Klokkaris said it’s hoped it will provide crucial clues as to the causes of the accident.
Two Greek air force officials and a pair of experts from the helicopter’s manufacturer have flown to the island to assist local investigators.
"We are interested in having the findings of this investigation as quickly as possible to determine the causes, whether its owed to human error, equipment failure or some other oversight," said Klokkaris.
Klokkaris said Papasozomenos was an experienced helicopter pilots with 880 hours of flight time under his belt, 346 of which were in the Mi-35.
He said Oleynik has part of a group of Mil instructors contracted by the National Guard to provide additional training to Cypriot pilots on the helicopter.
"The National Guard has recently expanded training for its pilots and it’s for this reason that we have signed this contract…training is a very serious subject that concerns us and there are always margins for improvement," Klokkaris said.
The National Guard declared three days of mourning and flags will fly at half mast at all army camps until July 7.
"I want to express my deepest sorrow over the tragedy that has again inflicted the National Guard and Cyprus...I've expressed my condolences to the Russian ambassador, " President Tassos Papadopoulos told reporters.
The cabinet cut short its meeting to allow Klokkaris to rush to the crash scene.
Klokkaris expressed his dismay at the loss of life and extended his condolences to the airmen’s families.
"The loss of personnel and weapons systems is a blow to the National Guard," said Klokkaris.
Expressions of shock came from all political leaders, including House Speaker Demetris Christofias who called the crash "tragic".
"I express our sorrow and anguish and wish that this is the last," said Christofias.
Papasozomenos had married wife Chara just last September and had been living in her home village of Ayios Athanasios.
The Mi-35 was one of 12 the National Guard took delivery of in secrecy back in 2001.
It was the third fatal air crash suffered by the Greek Cypriot military in four years.
The accident came less than a year after a National Guard turbo-prop PC-9 training aircraft went down near the island's second city of Limassol, killing two crew members.
The probe into that the September 10, 2005 c
On July 10, 2002, A National Guard Bell 206 VIP transport helicopter crashed near the Paphos village of Kouklia, killing five army officers, including National Guard Chief Evangelos Florakis.
An investigation into that crash found the helicopter to have gone down because of an engine fire, but officials could not definitively say what caused the fire. |

I moved the topic as I think this is the correct section.
Turkkan, 'announcement' would definitely have been the wrong place to put it as the section has a very clear function: 'Messages from the forum Administrators. '
btw, the Greek in your first posting doesn't show properly here. Is it just me? |
