Did I read this right??
Is there a vague possibility of recognition??
Otherwise this is a very succinct article and we shall simply have to wait for further developments. |

But while the Cyprus problem stagnates, EU-Turkey talks are moving ahead.
Nicos Emiliou, Cyprus's representative to the EU
Negotiations will start within weeks on the first two "chapters" - research, and education. EU diplomats are relatively upbeat, despite concerns on freedom of expression and freedom of religion. |

Unless Turkey opens its ports it will fail a review of its compliance with the customs union and its bilateral relations with other member states, due this autumn.
Without the opening of Turkish ports, he adds, "the overall progress of Turkey's negotiations will be affected. |

| Most EU diplomats and politicians do not want talks with Turkey to collapse in acrimony. |

Last month, the EU did finally agree 139m euros ($166m) of aid for the north that the Greek Cypriots had been blocking.
But the Turkish Cypriots and Turkey itself also want to see northern Cyprus allowed to trade directly with the EU, something the Greek Cypriots consider tantamount to sovereignty for the north. So it is stalemate. |
Lots of issues here! |

The report by the BBC shows that Turkey is heading towards a brick wall very fast. Turkey really must make moves on Cyprus if she is to avoid a crisis towards the end of the year.
The US/UK is probably in the process of trying to get talks restarted sometime in the summer, but I doubt Papadopoulos will fall into the trap that he fell into last time in New York. Unless certain guarantees regarding the substance of the talks is set clearly before hand it would seem our side will not be willing to enter into negotiations for the sake of getting Turkey off the hook regarding her EU obligations. |

Cyprus is a key to Turkey's foreign policy. She will turn that key so long as its need for defence is satisfied.
Does Turkey have a right of return issue anywhere else? It is a card which has been held with the hope originally, that the game would be won another way. |
