hERE'S A WHACKY IDEA FOR YOU... Cyprus proposes to Turkey, a Treaty for their Defence, so that by its reciprocal nature, assures the inability of other interlocutors, a militarily presence, without the agreement of the two, as partners.
Greece is over 400 miles away, who better to be a partner with, than Turkey, 40 miles away. |

I Have a better idea:
Put Cyprus in to NATO and you will have them working together:
MY idea is NO weapons or Military at all in Cyprus:
BUT I think they will when Turkey ever joins the EU:
PS who are we meant to be fighting???????????
We always seem to fight each other:
OR are we going to fight Terrorism with GWB? |

by cyprus who do you mean? Republic of Cyprus? or Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus?
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus already has a defence treaty with turkey. If you mean a defence treaty between the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey, then I doubt it will ever happen. As well as being technically at war, such a treaty would compromise the safety of Turkish Cypriots and since Turkey is (apparently) in Cyprus to safeguard the Turkish Cypriots then I dont think they will do this. |

Who controls Cyprus, controls Turkey. Turkey has expressed their unease, defensively since theycolonised the island several hundred years ago.
The oil and the straights being even more important to this NATO ally, does not eliminate the threat of a hostile neighbour, even with Cyprus joining NATO. Terrorism may be defeated shortly butif it is not, this to will become a direct threat.
This treaty is WHACky because it demands from Turkey, with its signing, a little bit of sovereignty. But it is a good idea, so that troops can be in place to thwart hostile agression, and to prevent other more powerful neighbours from having these designs in the future, for the long and very long run. |

No RW, it's WHACKY because I believe that such a treaty already exists between Turkey and the original Republic of Cyprus which was set up in 1960. The present "Republic of Cyprus" is nothing but a phony "Republic of Cyprus", a Greek Cypriot so-called "Republic of Cyprus". |

Perhaps we can have a union with Turkey - or ask to become a province of Turkey - then we would be really safe!!!
Or perhaps have both countries in the European Union for common security. |

well Greek Cyprus if that is who you are referring to cannot join NATO as Turkey will block this before a solution to the islands dispute with Turkey and before she herself is firming anchored in the EU. Not likely to happen for a while. Greek Cyprus is a hostile neighbour but cannot do anything to harm Turkey except perhaps use her Veto card, but that would mean harming Cyprus too.
Sure terrorism and oil are very important to the West, but Turkey is more important than Cyprus strategically, economically, militarily and politically as an ally, whether we as Cypriots like it or not.
Where is the Ceyhan oil pine passing throught? Turkey
Who is already a NATO (only Muslim NATO) member? -Turkey, who is not only best placed to act as a launching pad to Iraq, Syria and other parts of the Near East but has cultural/religious and even linguistic ties with these states? -Turkey
Who has a military alliance with Israel? -Turkey
whose economy is bigger, has more potential and is growing much faster? -Turkey
The idea that Greek Cypriots are equal to Turkey is IMO nonsense. |

Politically they are equals, each is a Nation. Eric assumes that nothing will change, I assert that things have to change. The reality is that Turkey still feels a need to defend against Greece. Russia, today, represents an ally, the Kurds pose a problem, being between them and Iraq as well.
Things are not black and white, as is so often said. The comparisons toward the Human Rights it must extend will focus on Cyprus, so long as it is not an ally.
As you say, eric, if TPap returns forthrightly, to the 1960 Constitution, anything is possible. |

Bullika is right, Turkey is geostrategically more important than us
Military alliance- are you on drugs? Theres no threat to Cyprus other than Turkey
From their point of view- what the hell is Cyprus going to do to help them against any enemy they may have?
Really, the most useless alliance of all time from both perspectives!! |
