A June 2002 report by Morten Torkildsen, an investigator with the Office of Carla del Ponte, Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, said that over £1.23 billion in Cyprus pounds was funnelled between 1992 and 2000 by Slobodan Milosevic and his cohorts through eight offshore companies in Cyprus, which were registered by the law firm of Tassos Papadopoulos. Funds from there were distributed to accounts held by companies and individuals located in more than 50 countries, according to the report.
Batic’s open letter, published in two newspapers, said: “If your first question to Papadopoulos will be when such a transfer (of the $1.7 billion) will take place, then your visit will have some meaning and I will stand at your disposal for anything you need.”
However, Batic expressed his doubts that this would happen as the law firm of the President had been involved in the whole problem. “We are not interested in Greek Cyprus support in resolving the Kosovo problem,” he said. “We are only interested that they return our money.”

Many know that Tpap has engaged in many dodgy dealings prior to becoming a president through his law firms and has shown no regard to anyone or anything, despite over the last 2 years many skeletons cropping up from his past, none seem to stick despite undoubtable proof  , my belief is that as the Republic of Cyprus president it cannot be accepted at the current moment for him to be put in court for his past disgressions but as i always say, every dog has it's day and his is coming.
Till then i will call him "Teflon Tassos". |

THE PRESIDENT of Serbia Boris Tadic arrived in Cyprus on an official visit last Tuesday. On the same day, the Serbian media carried an impassioned plea by the leader of the opposition, Vladan Batic, urging Tadic to ask for the return of $1.7 billion, which were transferred to Cyprus during the Milosevic years. The money went into eight offshore companies, established and administered by the Tassos Papadopoulos law office.
I have no intention of going into the details of this affair today, as I have done so on several occasions in the past. However, two statements made during President Tadic’s visit were worth writing about. Foreign Minister George Iacovou said that investigations by officials from the central banks of both countries had been carried out in Cyprus in the past and found that everything had been done legally.
This is a lie. The Serbian authorities have never said such a thing. On the contrary, they established and calculated and had repeatedly announced that the total sum of money that disappeared from the country amounted to $4.2 billion. In his report, the investigator of the International Crimes Tribunal at The Hague, Martin Torkildsen, refers to $1.7 billion, which he had managed to trace, but notes that the total amount could have been much bigger. As regards the Central Bank of Cyprus, it is one of the guilty parties in this case and nobody expects it to admit its guilt. On Wednesday the Serbian media reported Iacovou’s comments with a heavy dose of irony.
Tadic, meanwhile, said that he had raised the issue at his meeting with President Papadopoulos and was “very happy” with the response he was given; he added that the “Cyprus justice system could perfectly well deal with any problem”. From this comment, we can conclude that Papadopoulos assured Tadic that the matter was being dealt with by the Cypriot courts. If this was said, then it too is a big lie. The truth is that, for reasons obvious to the biggest idiot, the state’s legal services have covered up this big crime against the people of Serbia.
I have on countless occasions asked the Attorney-general’s office to inform us at which stage the three criminal investigations, ordered by former Attorney-general Alecos Markides in 2002, were, but have still to receive an answer. It is interesting to remember that one of the investigations was against a member of the Tassos Papadopoulos law office.
This is not all. In September 2004, it was revealed in a Nicosia court that that Antexol Trade Ltd – the main recipient of funds from Yugoslavia during the Milosevic years – had been struck off the records of the Registrar of Companies. Yet in May 2004, lawyers from the Tassos Papadopoulos law office appeared in court representing the “non-existent” company. Neither the court nor the Attorney-general found this affair strange enough to demand explanations.
At the beginning of this month, the Central Bank was summoned, during an ongoing trial at Nicosia district court, to present the annual accounts of Antexol Trade Ltd from 1994 onwards – this was the period of the large-scale laundering of Serbian funds. The Central Bank representative told the court that it did not have the documents, as these had been destroyed. The Ministry of Finance was then summoned to submit the documents, records of which would logically have been kept at the Inland Revenue Department. The answer was rather predictable – the department had destroyed the accounts!
President Tadic was right to be satisfied with the response of President Papadopoulos and was also right to have full confidence in the Cyprus justice system. Intelligent people like him are taken for a ride by the dozen every day, by Papadopoulos, the Central Bank Governor, the Attorney-general and our justice system.
