Tempers flared when a press release issued by the EU Parliament representation in Nicosia announced that members of the contact group were to hold meetings with members of “the Cypriot community in the northern part of the island”.
Although another press release issued yesterday replaced the expression “Cypriot community” with the expression “Turkish Cypriot community”, it came too late to prevent a group of between 50 and 100 demonstrators from unfurling flags and banners and chanting Turkish nationalist slogans at members of the contact group.

“We don’t expect them to recognise the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, but we do expect them to recognise our identity,” he said.

“We view ourselves as Turkish Cypriots, and we have no intention of stopping.
Describing us in the way they did is a denial of our identity, and this is not a very European thing to do,” Ekenoglu told reporters at a news conference after Monday’s meeting with the EP delegation.
Nami echoed the sentiment yesterday, but also accused Greek Cypriot EU representatives of having deliberately caused the stir by leaning on the delegation to drop the expression “Turkish Cypriot” from the press release.
“Fortunately, the group [once in the north] saw the realities and issued a second press release that reflected the realities,” he told the Mail.

“The group said they were impressed with all their meetings and agreed on the need for further dialogue. They also told us they found it intolerable that Turkish Cypriots are kept in isolation from the benefits of EU membership,” he said, adding that the delegation had “given its word” to help the community overcome current problems.

I wonder what were "the realities" that the group saw once they went to the North.I hope not 100 flag waving, slogan chanting, egg throwing Turkish Cypriots only. Not a good impression to give to the delegation from the club you want to join...
I read elsewhere that this demonstration caused a rift between the coalition parties CTP/DP in the North.Apparently CTP was against the demostration but the DP (Serdar Denktash's party) went ahead with it anyway. People are starting to talk about a coalition between the CTP and the UBP,but I think this talk is premature. |

It is premature and having UBP in goverment will be taking 2 steps back and we should not be happy for that to happen.
I know Denktash junior from years back, he was my neighbour(now i am giving away too much) and he vice presidency seems like a joke to me but......
Can you imagine that on the day of the protests he was caught throwing eggs at the delegations bus which for a vice president is just unacceptable. |

The actions of madsakis and Denktash junior must have the EU and the rest of the international community viewing us as childish idiots who do not understand civility and unacceptable actions. |
