Biker jailed for killing siblings in wheelie crash
A MOTORCYCLIST who killed two children when he lost control of his bike doing a wheelie in a residential area was yesterday jailed for two and a half years.
A Nicosia court yesterday sentenced 21-year-old Marios Vassiliou after he had pleaded guilty to causing death through reckless driving.
Judge Charalambos Charalambous also ordered that the 21-year-old’s licence be suspended for four years. Vassiliou had also pleaded guilty to charges of riding a vehicle without the necessary documents.
Vasilakis Michael, 15, and his 17-year-old sister Argyro were walking back from their school in Lakatamia at around 1.45pm on January 14, 2005, Vassiliou, then 20, lost control of his dirt bike as he was pulling a wheelie, and fell on the tarmac, while the motorcycle slammed into the siblings who were on the pavement.
Vasilakis was killed on the spot, while his sister succumbed to severe head injuries several days later.
Vassiliou, who was in the National Guard at the time of the accident, did not have a licence to drive the specific motorcycle, which he had bought a month earlier.
Sentencing yesterday, Judge Charalambous said the whole matter was unfortunate and tragic, adding that the problems of reckless driving were still very apparent in Cyprus. |
Just read this and was disgusted at how lenient the sentence was. What do u think? This guy should be made an example of. |

Mate that sentence is a joke and a half:
No License and and doing wheelies:
20 years the minimum:
This sentence remind me when I sit in on court cases in Australia as a Bail Justice and a JP: Some are bloody ridiculous:
They are beyond a joke:
One stage in Australia you got 1 year for killing a pedestrian and 5 years jail for cutting down a tree:
Stop the world I wont to get off: |

| You hear of road related deaths in Cyprus almost everyday and it isnt going to stop if the courts are so lenient with killers such as this stupid idiot. |

| Just imagine how those two kids parents must feel that the reckless death of their two children is worth only about a 2 year stretch in jail and a few years license revoke. Im amazed. |

the two kids' parents are also the parents of the biker.
Siblings means brothers or sisters. |

| nah they aint. when the articles says 'siblings', it means the two kids killed were siblings. Their surnames and the biker's surname are different. |

| Crazy, I remember commenting on this accident when it happened and hoping that they'd throw the book at this madman... unfortunately they tore out all the pages before throwing it at him... way too light a sentence and sends out all the wrong messages to the many idiots who plague the roads of Cyprus. |

sth that i read in a recent article.
firtsly, if i remember the newspapers at the time, they already convicted him before trial.
i think one should consider two things :
first his age - this showing of is due too young age imo. at this age his brain its on his ass (if i am allowed a cyprio saying)
second - i believe he will be punished by his conciense for the rest of his life. i know that noone can prove that this is the case, but the way i see it its a kid doing a stupid thing and killing two other kids by accident. that the chances are he will not be able to sleep.
knowing that showing off our cars or bikes is a common practise in cyprus - this person could be used, as a strong propaganda tool (if he agrees ofcource) in trying to put some sense to young people. in that way he can serve the society better. so i would suggest instead : take his driving licence away, and force him instead to give a lecture in highschools and in the army, of his experience.
i agree that there is nothing that can bring those two kids back to life and that it is tottaly his fault. but i dont really see the benefit to the society if he serves two or twenty years. |

Sorry cypezokyli but manslaughter is manslaughter however stupid the person may be. His actions killed 2 innocent kids that were probably walking to the shops like any other kid.
Because of this idiot they are now dead. They should only let him out of jail if there is a mob waiting for him. |

I used to know a guy who killed someone while driving drunk. During my National Service I also got to know the bf of the girl riding on the back of the scooter of the guy who got killed. The guilty person is destroyed. It haunts him every day.
Sentencing is not the solution. The police need to do a good job BEFORE people get killed.
As a Cypriot youth I know 2 dead guys, 2 almosts (I mean REALLY close) and about 4 or 5 with metal parts in their joints, all from dicking about on the road.
Sentencing is all well and good, but its already too little too late. |
