Interesesting article. Thanks for posting the link Alastair.
Mind boggling numbers. I already 'knew' them but every time I see them in print they boggle my mind.
Market Cap of $138 billion ! or $138,000,000,000 in long hand ! In 8 years ! Mind boggling !
Republic of Cyprus's GDP (Gross domestic product) by comparison is a mere $16 billion - about 8.5 times less than the market cap of google ! |

Market cap figures always sound outrageous, better to look at their annual turnover as an indicator their actual size. As we all know, companies that look totally healthy in market cap terms can serious plummet in a very short space of time. Remember the time when lastminute.com was THE internet company to watch... how times change.
If you looked at the market cap of the Republic of Cyprus, it would be a similarly mind-boggling figure valuing land assets, property, labour potential etc. I dread to think what the market cap of the US would be... I know that the NASDAQ and Dow Jones collective market cap is something crazy like $10 trillion ($10,000,000,000,000) |
