Turkish charter airline brings extra flights to north
TURKEY’S oldest and biggest charter airline Pegasus Airlines is to open an office in the north to facilitate up to 14 flights per week.
According to Turkish Cypriot press reports, the office is to be opened within the month due to increased demand. It will operate flights between Tymbou (Ercan) Airport and Ankara, Adana and Istanbul. From Turkey, the airline is connected with 70 destinations all over the world.
Pegasus was set up in 1990 as a joint venture with Irish airline Aer Lingus
It operates two Boeing 737-400s and 12 Boeing 737-800s. This will be its first venture into package deals between the north and Turkey. The first flight is due to take place on January 25 from Tymbou to Istanbul.
Zeki Ziya, the company’s representative in the north, held a meeting at the weekend with Orhan Tolun, chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Travel Agents’ Union to discuss the new series of flights.
Tourism to the north has picked up significantly since Cyprus joined the EU and since the crossing points were opened across the Green Line. A number of Greek Cypriots have travelled to Turkey through the north and, combined with an aggressive promotions campaign, and an unprecedented spate of tourism development abroad, it is also attracting foreign visitors, although not yet featured on British holiday brochures. The government and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) are closely monitoring the situation.
Reports yesterday said the Turkish Cypriot tourism authorities were planning to take part in two tourism fairs in Vienna and Bombay in the next week.
There were also reports yesterday that two new hotels with a total capacity of 1,000 beds were due to being operation in the Karpass peninsula.
