Re, did you check out this software? It's a Flash IRC client that has some popularity. It needs PHP and a special "gateway" server to work though...

Thanks for that respiridus.

What I am looking for (and tried with this last attempt) was for a web based IRC client that integrated with the forum. The main 'integration' is with it showing how many users are on cht , in the main forum itself and the automatic use of forum usernames as IRC names.

I am sure that the flash client you refer to could be made to this integration, but it is beyond my skills to 'tailor it' so.

Basically I have been looking at the 'pre written' solutions that are specfically tailored for use with the phpBB 2.0.X forum software.

Some of the main ones are listed here
http://www.phpbbhacks.com/category/38/

Chatbox is the 'old' chat system

the second one in that list 'flash irc chat' is what I tried last night and will be removing later tonight.

I amy try others, but I am not sure any of the other systems will show how many users are currently on chat within the forum, which is a feature I like (if it works).

Why are you removing it? I found it pretty good, except for the fact that there were some "technical" problems:

- That HTML stuff that appeared in FF (easy to fix).
- A strange "settings" dialog, full of "undefined" messages, that appeared when I loaded it for the second time (could be a problem with caching, also easy to fix).

Other than these, I found it pretty fast and stable.

There are a series of problems with this mod.

Firstly it would appear that some users just cannot get a connection to the ICQ-IRC servers using it.

Secondly it will _only_ work with ICQ-IRC servers (these have been modifed to talk through xml to the client?). I would like to be able to control what irc server the cleint uses.

The ICQ-IRC servers seem to only allow one user session per IP address, which is a problem as some users use ISP's that force the use of web proxy server and thus they all appear to come from same IP address. Only one of these would be allowed to connect at a time.

The integration with the forum, that should show how many people are in the chat does not work reliably.

The chat client itself has a tendancy to 'corrupt' (at least it has for me). If you exit and immediately enter chat again, it will say you have 'exceeded session limit for that IP' until the original session times out - which is frustrating.

Finally there is not control of the colours used, short of editing the falsh .swf file itself.

All in all I think a IRC based chat system would be better than the current chat system, but this particular phpBB integrated client is too restrictive and too buggy for me.

The most advanced and still being developed phpBB integrated IRTC client would appear to be the PJIRC one.

However I do not seem able to reach any pages on their support forum, other than the front page here

http://pjirc.com/forum/index.php

Can anyone else actually get into any of these forum threads? Is the problem local to me or general?

Hmmm appears the whole site is down currently. I guess I will try later.

The server does not resolve. The domain seems to be registered with Dynamic DNS (ddns.net), which was sold to no-ip.com a few months ago. ns1.no-ip.com does not have any record of pjirc.com.

Chances are the server doesn't exist anymore. Sad

Thats really wierd because I did reach the forums front page (and am pretty sure it was on that domain?), then when I went to look at a forum section it seemed to die. Now as you say it does not reslove at all ???

Bizzare.

So it is

A temporary glitch somewhere.

Anyway like I say I will remove the 'new' chat system from the forum later tonight.

Having done that I will then investiagte pjirc and _perhaps_ install that at some date in the future, if and when I get a chance.

The demo of the applet on their site looks pretty good, but then so did the last system I tried.

OK I have removed the 'new' chat system from the forum.

I will try adding 'pjIRC' when I get a chance. Having poked around their support forum, and played around with their demo I think it worth a try.

Will keep you all informed of any progress.

OK I have added PJIRC to the forum

It seems to work - and is also a lot more complex. There are 100's of options, so may take a while to get it fine tuned properly but it looks pretty good to me so far.

You can access it using the 'chat' icon on the main menu at top of forum pages.

I am going to try and 'patch it' now to show how many users are in the chat room on the main forum page.

Again I will leave the old chat system for the moment untill others have commented / we have seen if there are problems with it.

Any feedback is welcome.

OK

There are loads and loads and loads of options and settings and the like with this chat system

Some basic notes.

Firstly you may get a 'security warning' message when you enter the chat (depending on your browser security settings), saying that the java program is not 'trusted'. It is ok the programme is safe (to best of my knowledge) so just run or ok this mesasage

Secondly you can now add to your profile irc commands that will run automaotcialy when you use the IRC chat java applet. In IRC you can register a nickname to stop others being able to use it. When you first join you have to use an 'identify' command to verify you are the 'owner' of that nick name. So you can add this as a command to run automaticaly every time you enter chat.

I will try and write better / clearer instructions about how you can register your nickname and other features when I get a chance.
