Good idea. Or how about putting a glass of ouzo (raki) on your head and dance with the song? Smile

Filio has hit on what I didn't like about the Annan Plan anthem ... yes, we really do need an anthem with a "loving nostalgic feel", since the very act of re-unification is (or should be) an exercise in love and nostalgia ...

As for the particular tune, I think it is very touching and if it was created form scratch to be the anthem I wouldn't hesitate. I am not sure however if a popular song can so easily be upgraded to a national anthem.

I do not agree it is necessary for a bicommunal team to have authored the anthem - so long as the end result resonates with both communities ...

In a previous note I said maybe we should get Cat Stevens to write one OR
Just note all the best things about Cyprus:
Mountains, seas, springs, ect and turn it into a Poem and then the tune:
I have written over 100 songs myself (Mostly Rock) but that doesn't stop us writing a poem and getting it done to music:
I have a good friend Jon Lord from Deep Purple I am sure if I spoke to Jon he would happy to write something: He has written 1000s of songs and film scores:
But if we could get Cypriot like George Micheal, Mario's Tokas ect or have a competition it would be great:
BUT the poem should come first:
I have also written a song about Cyprus about 15 years ago called:
It Might Just be a Rock:
I still say Cat Stevens because his words are very peace-full and from the heart: Listen to:
Morning has broken:

Anyone with only two cents of music knowledge would have realised that this song is a ballad, and has nothing to do with dancing with ouzo in someone’s head or smashing plates. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

If someone wants my opinion, I don't think this song has a "popular" tune to it. Yes, the current execution includes bouzouki, but, since it's a baland, I think one could easily create an execution with brass organs and subtle drums.

We could use just the first two stanzas for the anthem to make it shorter. The first stanza (that talks about the good side of Cyprus) could be played by brass only. While the second stanza (that talks about our island's bitter past) could be played by brass and subtle drums. Finally, the ending repetition of "chrysoprasino fyllo..." could be played with louder drams as a conclusion.

I'm not a musician, but you get the idea. Wink

Ok, chill out dude. That was a quick reply, meant to be taken as a joke. As I said before, I like the song a lot. It's touching but not suitable for a national anthem in my opinion.

I feared that this song may have been too 'greek' for many of the people who voted Sad .

Howver, what i like is the lyrics of the song...maybe the 'tune' sounds too 'greek', but i could easily imagine it being changed to something more suitable, like respy said. I would not like a cypriot national anthem to be so 'generic' like many others...i owuld like it to have that typically eastern mediterainian feel to it. Very Happy

I can just imagine this particular "national anthem" being played in two (maybe three) different languages one after the other at every occasion.

Turkish Cypriot and Greek soldiers standing to attention and each singing the "national anthem" in their own language. Confused

BTW, would they have to smash plates when it's finished? Laughing

Has anyone tried to sing the Turkish version to hear what it sounds like?

Sorry guys, it sounds too much like a Greek song that I would play if I want to take my old lady for a spin on the dance floor.

The Annan plan Anthem was to some extent an imitation of the Turkish national anthem. A substantial part of the rhythm and the instruments playing it, do sound very similar. It is clear that the person that submitted the piece for evaluation to the UN committee was a Turkish person, which tried to imitate the Turkish anthem to some extent -especially the starting part, although I wouldn't say that the two anthems are identical.

I really love the lyrics of this song. It nails every feeling about Cyprus on the head Smile, without turning political.

But i do think that it is a bit too long but then again, surely it could be slightly altered and shortened.

You never know, maybe when other countries heard their anthems for the 1st time they weren't too impressed-it just needs to be played over and over again!

It only needs 3 verses: One greek, one turkish and one English:
The main chorus should try to be in all 3 languages:
Like
Cyprus (Island in Turkish) Agapi(Love)Irini(Peace) in Greek:

You can't have a nartional Anthem that lasts 2-3 minutes played 3 times...Man that will bore prople to tears...
A national Anthem should not be more than 30 seconds, period.

Don't you thing that the Cypriots have to solve other problems first and then care about an anthem?
