I've been given a Netgear DG834G v2 wireless router (thanks Santa) but haven't got a clue what to do with it - apart from plugging one side into the phone socket and the ethernet card into one of the other sockets.

I'm a subscriber to i-choice netrunner.

Any advice, please?

Hi kwaka2 welcome to the forum.

I am assuming you use a dsl based service and the router is a combined router, switch and dsl modem.

What you can do with the router is set up your own private internal network and then via the router connect that to your internet connection, thus allowing any machine on your internal network to share this single internet connection (as well as share harddrives and printers etc on your local network).

Hope that is of some help ?

That's exactly what I want to do, problem is I'm not sure how.

The device is a modem/switch/router.

I understand that I will need to change the router's VPI/VCI settings - but what do I need to do to configure a desk computer & a laptop to network & have Internet access? (Eventually I'd also like to connect my handheld).

I know I could use MS's Internet sharing, but then I'd need to have one computer switched on to use the other.

Any tips, please?

Many thanks for the welcomes.

Hopefully I'll be able to contribute in the very near future.

A router has to 'sides'

The 'out' side to the intertnet, which in your setup is the phone line socket (necause it has a dsl modem in it) and an 'in' side which is the 4 ethernet ports on the router.

I can hot help much on setting the 'out' side of things as that depends on your ISP.

On the 'in side' all you should need to do is plug a (windows) PC into one of the four ethernet posrt on the router, with the ethernet conection at the PC end set to 'obtain IP adress and dns automaticaly' (which is the default setting I think).

You should then be able to talk to the internet with that PC.

Plug a second PC into a second ethernet port and again get IP and DNS auotmaticaly and this PC should be able to talk to both the internet and to the other local PC (firewall settings permitting).

Hope that helps a bit.

Basically you want the router set to assign IP addresses to connected PCs automaticaly (DCHP) and the PC set to pick them up automaticaly from the router.

Let us know how you get on.
