I saw this film last week and became disturbed about it for several days.

Basically, it's about the emotions and reactions of people in Australia, after the northern hemisphere had been destroyed by nuclear war, and all life in the southern hemisphere was also about to be destroyed by radiation. In the end, everybody dies.

It's a 50's film if I remember correctly, so reflects the 'hot' Cold War sentiment of that time. Some of the acting is 50's wooden, but it's a brilliant anti-war film and depicts the catastrophe that awaited the planet in the event of a nuculer (in George Bush terms) war.

A better and more evocative film if you can get hold of it is 'Threads'. It was made by the BBC in the mid-1980s and was a depiction of the lead-up and aftermath of a nuclear attack on the UK. By all accounts when it was first released (I was only 8 so don't really remember), it caused one heck of a stir and scared a lot of people. I first saw it aged 11 and it certainly gave me nightmares for a while (this was towards the end of the Cold War). Highly recommended, no glamourous actors, just gritty realism.

There was a similar movie from the 50s. The one I watched was a 2000 remake for Australian TV, though. Did not have a big budget or big name actors, but the actual filming and emotional interaction between the characters is superb nevertheless.
