It's a 50's film if I remember correctly, so reflects the 'hot' Cold War sentiment of that time. Some of the acting is 50's wooden, but it's a brilliant anti-war film and depicts the catastrophe that awaited the planet in the event of a nuculer (in George Bush terms) war.
A better and more evocative film if you can get hold of it is 'Threads'. It was made by the BBC in the mid-1980s and was a depiction of the lead-up and aftermath of a nuclear attack on the UK. By all accounts when it was first released (I was only 8 so don't really remember), it caused one heck of a stir and scared a lot of people. I first saw it aged 11 and it certainly gave me nightmares for a while (this was towards the end of the Cold War). Highly recommended, no glamourous actors, just gritty realism. |

There was a similar movie from the 50s. The one I watched was a 2000 remake for Australian TV, though. Did not have a big budget or big name actors, but the actual filming and emotional interaction between the characters is superb nevertheless. |
