| I'm just a tad disappointed with Blair's approach to this issue. The real issue in the EU budget are the bloated payments given through CAP to the richest member states, it's a total farce. Would you believe that French farmers are paid $2 per cow per day as subsidy, which is more income than half the world's population lives on! Major reform of the CAP is necessary, but Chirac refuses to make any concessions on this. Personally I think Blair should take this issue to the wire rather than forcing concessions from the weakest member states and making himself look the bogeyman. |

If the CAP budget was reduced, or spread more evenly for everyone else, then the budget would not be sucha problem, and im sure that then britain would give up its rebate.
The fact taht almost 50%of the EU budget is spent on about 5% of its GDP(agriculure) is absolutely preposterous. France needs to stop being such an old man....i watched a panorama program, and from what i could see the french are so stubborn, that they dont wantto change anything....we can all learn off finland |

Amen... but with the German's on-side, the French always manage to portray the UK as Europe's trouble-maker. The French are fighting tooth-and-claw to hang onto the EU of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s which they dominated. Refusal to reform CAP is part of that and betrays the French as not playing by collegial rules. As Dhavre said, if CAP was reformed, I have no doubt that the rebate would go, but until the French see sense, the nonsensical rebate should remain as well. |
