| You know, i dont think its fair to talk of George Best like that. Alcholism is a disease, not a matter of free will. |

Thing is though, he wasted two livers, and probably put someone elses life in danger, if not lead them to a premature death due to the increadibly long waiting list. |

| When you use the word waste, your implying a fault in his characters, or something that was within his control, yet alcholism is something which plagues peoples lives, it is a disease, not a fault or weakness in a persons character. The people who should be blamed are his so-called friends who were serving him drinks. |

By saying that he had no control over himself in denying drink at all is a little far fetched imo. By saying it was not his fault wipes him clean of any responsibility he had to keep himself healthy, and to appreciate the liver of another person.
The person(or indeed his/her family) who could not have the liver he used must be fuming now.
Every person has a responsibility to look after themselves, and pickling yourself is im sure not a good way to go about it!
Ok, the people who bought/gave him drinks have some responsibilty of his sad, tragic death, but at the same time he could not have got himself in this mess in the beginning.
To an extent Khan i agree with what you are saying, but at the same time, he was the master of his own downfall, and he could have taken control at many points, most likely...but did not.
I dont want to take away the fact he was a great footballer, but on the other hand.... |

| Can someone please explain to me how alcoholism is a disease? Although I didn't see Best in his golden years, I accept that he was one of the greatest footballers of all time. However; how can it be a disease? He initially chose to drink and I know that it can get completely out of control, I just dont understand how it can be defined as a disease. |

| Khan, the reason why Best raised my ire is that the mother of good friend of mine was on the liver transplant waiting list at the same time as George Best. Unfortunately she died due to the unavailability of a suitable liver about a year after Best received his new liver... so you never know, Best's gain could potentially have been her loss. I'm not saying this was the case, but hopefully you can see what I'm driving at. Best's alcoholism was certainly a self-destructive addiction, but his receipt of a new liver could well have taken it away from someone whose illness was due to a medical condition, not the consequence of self-destructive, albeit addictive behaviour. |

| Well, i think it easy to pass judgment, none of us are alcoholics. I guess its a case of walking a mile in someones shoes first. |

I think its defined as a disease because its an addiction that is beyond your control from a certain stage onwards. The same as with drugs f.e. |

I think its a shame for people who do things in excess and cannot maintain self control, obesity is another example and drugs, in fact people are dropping dead all over the world because they do too much of something or other (Cigarettes and lung cancer being another prime example).
