| The "battle for Macedonia" has been revived with a vengeance, threatening to poison Greek-American relations as well as peace and harmony in a neglected corner of the Balkans. |

Greeks feel they should stick to their guns, if necessary blocking Macedonia's economic lifelines to Europe and its aspiration to join NATO. |
Greece refuses to recognize the Republic of Macedonia under its constitutional name.
As if the massacres against the Slavs of Aegean Macedonia early in the XX century were not enough, Greece continues its hostile and repressive attitude towards the Slavs in the region.
How far would a country go over its historical pride? |

***Here we go again... Greece is again the easy target for bg_turk in order to show his true colours... Of course once again bg_turk fails to mention that Bulgaria doesn't recognise the existence of an independent Macedonian country and considers Macedonians as Bulgarians with the ulterior motive to grab Macedonia at the first given chance...
So tell us bg_turk does Bulgaria recognise a Macedonian ethnicity? Does Bulgaria recognise a Macedonian language? Does Bulgaria truly want Macedonia to exist as an independent country? I'm all ears...
Bg_turk is racist against a nation (Greeks) an accusation that many a times he has thrown back at Greeks that visit this site and for the most part do not provoke...
Obviously bg_turk gets a kick out of posting propaganda and negative comments about Greece as he never posts anything against Turks and most of all Bulgarians... If this is not prejudice and provocative then what is? |

Hello sophisticatedbeggar,
I have been fed enough propaganda during the communist regime and I think I am mature enough to know what is true and what is propaganda. On the issue of the ethnic cleansing of slavs in the north of greece I have mostly obtained my information from foreign sources and I formed my opinion after reading the carnegie report. I recommend you read it as well

It is a real eye opener for balkan nationalism.
Here is what wikipedia says about the foreign relationship between Bulgaria and Macedonia
| Quote: |
Bulgaria was the first country to recognize the independence of the Republic of Macedonia. Bulgaria has however refused to recognise the existence of a separate Macedonian nation and a separate Macedonian language. It argues that the Macedonians are a subgroup of the Bulgarian nation and that the Macedonian language is merely a dialect of Bulgarian.
This leads to some complications when signing treaties between both countries. Bulgaria gives the Slavs in the Republic the right to obtain Bulgarian citizenship and about 10% of them have already taken advantage of this. A big part of the population of Bulgaria believes that lands, population, traditions, language of the Republic are historically Bulgarian.
The Republic has very good relations with Bulgaria in the political, economic and military spheres. The governments of the two countries work to improve business relations. Bulgaria also supports the Macedonian bid to enter the EU and NATO. Bulgaria has also donated tanks, artillery and other military technology to the Macedonian Army. |
The Bulgarian attitude towards Macedonia at the moment is indifferent. Bulgaria does recognize the macedonian language as a seperate language as spoken in Macedonia, but not in bulgarian macedonia, due to fear for territorial claims.
Macedonians in the Republic of Macedonia have been subject to a lot of serbian influence, and they have lost any bulgarian national conscience that they may have had, and now I understand they are a seperate nation at the moment. Most bulgarians acknowledge their right to call themselves whatever they want and to be whatever they want as long as this does not interfere with bulgaria's teritorial integrity and sovergnity.
We leave history to the historians, and do not politicize the issue like Greece does.
I guess the issue of macedonia for bulgaria is very much like that of cyprus for you. If cypriots were to declare that they do not speak greek, and they speak cypriot, would you recognize this as a different language? Do you thinkg of cypriots as a different nation? |
