So if they could get the supply and demand right and racism was not an issue then would you say it was going in the right direction. |
no, because as I said the government has too much power both economically and politically, over the lives of ordinary people. It is just not possible for such a government not to abuse its power. And as you can see almost every single communist country is totalitarian.
Besides economically i think unless you are a magician there is no way to predict what demand would be. The only way to do that would be through price variations, but in communism prices were fixed by the government so there was no real indicator for demand. Basically there was no feedback loop between production and consumption. Producers just produced without caring about consumers. |

some people like communism because the governemtn supposedly took care of everything. there was 100% employment, and everybody had a job, though the economy was absolutely inefficient. Healthcare was for free. Everything was really cheap and people generally had the money to afford anything, but the supply was very limitted naturally. The communist moto was "Give according to your ability, take according to your necessity!", and naturally there were too many that needed to take, but not enough that wanted to give.
Even if you had the money to buy something, you could not because there was no supply and nowhere to buy it from, unless you were willing to wait on very long queues for hours and hours I remember one year the state produced too many screws and they had no idea what to do with them, it was just such a waste. On the other hand sometimes there were very accute shortages of necessities, and it was usual in Bulgaria to have to wait on a queue just to buy bread every morning.
The other good (or bad thing depending on your perspective) thing about communism is that it weakened religion. So most of the bulgars and turks in BUlgaria are generally not very religious. ...... |
with this part I mostly agree. Pretty good summary, bg_turk.
But I can't remember that we ever had to queue for things like bread..... Imported, "expensive" stuff like oranges for example, yes, as there was never enough supply (due to the shortage of foreign exchange), but never staple food.
A good thing that is even recognized by people now here in the western part of Germany when they get to know people from the East is, that in general we were much more standing together, caring about the neighbours, giving a helping hand to each other etc. People had closer relationships. I don't know how I shall precisely describe that. It was a better social, community life...
I did not have such personal bad experiences as bg_turk, but then again he was in a special situation, being not bulgarian. In my opinion what happened to him is not necessarily justified by the fact that he lived in a communist country.
Well, I will not dive into political, economical, ideological or philosophical comparisons as I uderstood that brother asked more for personal/individual points of view.

I found this picture on the website of my region. I think it has a very strong symbolism about the effect of communism

This is another empty turkish house in Bulgaria abandoned because of the communist oppression. Its owners probably live somewhere in Turkey now.

| bg_turk I don't think that the two pics you provided above are representing communism. If I search for some, I can provide such photographs from _any_ country in the world.... |

Hi city I was just looking for a pretext to attach some pictures from my region. Excuse my intrusiveness. This was a cheap excuse to put them I agree |
