Greetings All,

Could someone please advise me on the following: I have a flat in Paphos, and I'd like to have a Turkish friend come and visit, flying from mainland Turkey to Lefkosia in the north and meeting me at the border. What paperwork would she need in order to cross the border?

Many thanks in advance.

My understanding (which may be wrong) is that your friend will not be able to cross from the north to the south.

EU citizens may cross. Non EU citizens from places like New Zealand and the like seem ok too, however I do not think a non EU Turkish citizen would be allowed to cross.

The south still considers entering Cyprus via the north and offence. They agreed to not hamper the free movement of EU citizens despite this when they joined the EU and my NZ partner has not be stopped from crossing either, even though she is not an EU citizen and had entered Cyprus via the north (and is resident in the north).

Does anyone have any more concrete infor?

Welcome to the forum btw

Hi K Crouan
welcome to the forum:
Hope you add your thoughts to the Cyprus problems because anything new is always worth looking at!
I mean we cant be any worse than the politicians in Cyprus WHO stuffed Cyprus!
IF I where you I would check with the Republic of Cyprus website: Just send them an email and see IF you get an honest answer!

IF I where you I would go to Kyernia and go to my uncle Stelios Katselis DOME Hotel and meet there:
cheers
PS I think the only reason TURKS are not allowed to visit the Republic of Cyprus is the fact that Greek Cypriot are not allowed to go to Turkey for holidays:

Yia sou, Crouan.
Foreigners who enter CY from illegal ports & airports are not allowed to come to the free areas of CY. I believe this is not the case with EU citizens.

But why your friend doesn't take the legal way to come to Cyprus?
She will only need visa as TR is recognised by CY.

De, Cypriots do travel to TR since CY became EU member.

In practical terms it is also the case with non EU citizens provide they are white /non muslim enough. I know of NZ , Aussie , US and israeli nationals that all cross from north to south without problems. Turks (and other similarly dark / muslim nationals like those from pakistan etc) do not get treated the same way from what I have heard.

Well you may not have heard of such but I assure you that non EU citizens from places like NZ are crossing the border daily with no problems. My partner is a NZ national and crosses regularly. I also know personally of other non EU nationals that do so without problems. Yet I think we both know that a non EU national that is a Turkish national would not be allowed to cross, even if they had all necessary visas. The stories of non EU nationals of say Pakistan citizenship having problems are I admit 'hersay' to me - I do not personally know of this happening but have 'heard' of it happening.

I personally have no doubt that the law stating that entry into the Republic of Cyprus via the north is illegal is being applied in a haphazard and inconsistent way with regard to non EU citizens. I have little doubt that there is an 'ethnic / racial' element to this inconsistent application of the Republic of Cyprus laws.

A NZ or US national should have no more ability to cross from the north to the south than a Turkish national with appropriate visas should have, yet the reality is ,in my perception at least, that the NZ and US and the like nationals do so with no trouble and Turkish nationals do not.

Greetings All,

Many thanks for the prompt replies and the welcomes. Famagusta, U R right, a visa and a flight to Larnaca/Paphos is the easiest solution, however it also means 3 flights instead of one and a trip to the Cypriot Consulate in Athens...I was on the lookout for that easy solution, just in case it's there.

On the bright side she is blonde, that might help at the border, I could teach her to say "G'Day mate".

Cheers
