The Facts About Cyprus
Did You Know ...
That Cyprus is only 40 miles from the southern coast of Turkey, but 600 miles from mainland Greece?
That Turkish Cypriots have lived in Cyprus for over 400 years?
That Cyprus was never a "Hellenic island," but was in fact a Turkish island for nearly 350 years up until 1914?
That Cyprus became an independent state in 1960, under a Constitution that provided for a bi-communal government with shared and equal political status for both the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots?
That the parties in Cyprus and the governments of the United Kingdom, Greece, and Turkey ratified a Treaty of Guarantee in 1960 that also provided for the security of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriots?
That the conflict in Cyprus began in 1963, when the then-president of the republic, Archbishop Makarios III launched an all-out attack on the Turkish Cypriot population, unilaterally dismissed all Turkish Cypriot officials from the government and declared the constitution "dead and buried".
That the inter-communal violence in Cyprus was a veritable ethnic-cleansing campaign and was directed against the Turkish Cypriot community, forcing Turkish Cypriots into ghetto-like enclaves on 3% of the island?
That the violence in Cyprus prompted the introduction of a United Nations peacekeeping force (UNFICYP) in March 1964, which is still in place?
That the U.S. special envoy during the 1963-64 Cypriot crisis, Under Secretary of State George W. Ball, stated in his memoirs that "Makarios' central interest was to block off Turkish intervention so that he and his Greek Cypriots could go on ... massacring Turkish Cypriots"?
That the present division of Cyprus has its origins in that violence culminating in the coup d'etat against Archbishop Makarios and his government on July 15, 1974, which was carried out with the active support of the then-government in Greece?
That entire Turkish Cypriot villages were razed and their inhabitants slaughtered by Greek Cypriots in the days following the coup d'etat?
That, under the Treaty of Guarantee of 1960, these developments required collective or individual intervention by the governments of the United Kingdom, Greece, and Turkey?
That Turkey addressed the issue of intervention with the United Kingdom, but when the U.K. did not take action Turkey was compelled to intervene on its own, on July 20, 1974, to stop the bloodshed and provide for the safety of Turkish Cypriots?
That Turkey's decision to intervene in Cyprus, under Article IV of the Treaty of Guarantee of 1960, was endorsed by a resolution #573 adopted on July 29, 1974 by the Council of Europe's Standing Committee of the Consultative Assembly?
That an "Exchange of Populations Agreement," providing for the voluntary relocation of population groups, was concluded by the official representatives of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides (Messrs. Denkta_ and Clerides) on August 2, 1975, and was implemented by UNFICYP?
That the Turkish intervention in Cyprus effectively ended the ethnic-cleansing and inter-communal violence which, between December 1963 and July 1974, had taken the lives of thousands of Turkish Cypriots?
That the Turkish Cypriot people desire only a new partnership and equal political status between the two sides?
That, despite Greek Cypriot allegations of "intransigence," it is the Turkish Cypriot side that has initiated, accepted, or supported numerous initiatives for a settlement --- in 1972, 1977, 1979, 1985-86, 1992, 1993-94, and at this very moment?
That the parties in Cyprus came close to a settlement in 1992, through the "set of ideas" proposed by the then United Nations Secretary-General, which were in major part approved by the Turkish Cypriots but ultimately rejected by the Greek Cypriots once their membership bid for the European Union began moving forward?
That, 39 years after its Constitutionally-guaranteed political status was unilaterally and illegally revoked, the Turkish Cypriots still suffer under unjust discrimination, in the form of an all-out economic, political and cultural embargo?
That confidence is undermined and progress toward a settlement in Cyprus is compromised by the determination to make Cyprus a Greek-dominated island, by the continuing embargo of Turkish Cypriots, and by threats from Athens to block the European Union enlargement process if "Cyprus" is not admitted?
A Quotation to Ponder
"Both before and after the events of December 1963, the Makarios government continued to advocate the cause of ENOSIS [political union with Greece] and actively pursued the amendment of the Constitution and the related treaties to facilitate this ultimate objective...There is little doubt that much of the violence which the Turkish Cypriots claim led to the total or partial destruction of 103 Turkish villages and the displacement of about a quarter of the total Turkish Cypriot population was either directly inspired or certainly connived at by the Greek Cypriot leadership."
Select Committee on Foreign Affairs, British House of Commons
Unanimous report, June 2, 1987

We can all see how they have twisted the truth or basically lied...but do these 'facts' seem like they were made by the British House of Commons as stated at the end of such an uncredible report? |

LOLOLOL....typical Greek Cypriot propaganda machine at it's best through the mouth of De-La-Sol....
Only the last papragraph that I have highlighted above is what the British House of Commons is quoted as saying, not the whole "report" as you are trying to make everyone believe. It's good job that it says "A Quotation to Ponder".
But maybe that's why you decided not to supply the link.
Here it is: http://www.ataa.org/ataa/ref/facts_cyprus.html
But maybe you missed the date that the quote mentioned was made by the British House of Commons in June 2, 1987 and also missed the dates the report mentiones from 1963 all the way to 1994. How could that be that a quote made in 1987 mentiones facts in 1994?
But knowing the Greek Cypriot propoganda machine I am sure you thought this would go unnoticed by everyone, right?
Ooopppss De_La_Soul.
ZOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM...0 to head on crash against the wall in less then 0.2 seconds for the Greek Cypriot propaganda machine. |

There is no lie or propaganda as De-Las-Soul is trying to make us believe. What he istrying to do is though is to make us believe that the BHoC is supposed to have said all that that is in that article he posted but it is only the last paragraph what is quoted by the BHoC.
De_La_Soul is deliberately trying to mislead people and spread lies and rumors like an "old woman" which he accuses others of doing. |

Blinkers on as always Eric!
The fact that Makarios abandoned the Enosis cause in 1967 does not enter into it. The fact that Makarios stood up to the Greek Junta does not mean anything to you.
Of course every point of view of the Greek Cypriot's is propaganda and everything from the Turkish Cypriot's is the absolute truth and should not be questioned!
Give us a break! |

Define 'all out attack'? Are you saying Makarios himself gave orders to start inter-communal violance? Are you saying that none of the violance was caused by Turkish Cypriots? Was it not Turkish Cypriots who walked out on the government because they did not agree with changing the constitution?

lol...a classic one. So we should say that Turkish Cypriots also carried out ethnic cleansing even BEFORE the invasion, because around the same amount from both communities died before 1974. Besides, the Turkish Cypriots themselves lived in enclaves...even members of the TMT forced there own communities to do so.

The bit of 'propoganda' that is from this quote is this one, imo...It was not a Turkish island..it was Ottoman if i am not mistaken. And i have heard many Turkish Cypriots here, say that the ottoman empire was not a turkish empire...so connecting alledged atrocities(armenian) to the Turkish state, that were carried out by the Ottoman empire is said to be wrong...so thus is it not wrong to say that Cyprus was a Turkish island?
other than that, most of it seems to be ok...but as we all know...one side will only put in stuff to make the other side look bad... |

My, my, my, anyone other Greek Cypriot propagandist who wants to jump to the defense of another Greek Propagandist who intentionally is spreading lies and rumors like an "old woman"?
boys, I lost my blinkers in 1963 when that murdering scum of a Priest Makarios ordered the extermination of all the Turkish Cypriot's in the name of EOKA but that is exactly what you lot are worried about. You are worried that Turkish Cypriots like me will catch you out when you try to spread your lies and point them out so that everyone can see it for themselves.
EOKA A and EOKA B was after the same thing and that was ENOSIS and they both murdered anyone who stood in their way.
EOKA A murdered the British and the Turkish Cypriot who worked for the British and was against the idea of ENOSIS. They even murdered Greek Cypriots who didn't want ENOSIS.
EOKA B murdered Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots who dared to stand in their way.
Makarios signed the 1960 Constitution with a pen in one hand and a knife in the other. Blood started to drip from his hands when he ordered the extermination of all Turkish Cypriot's in 1963 but he went to his grave without making his dream come true.
Makarios and TPaps were involved in the planning of the Akritas plan and both were EOKA A members.
Makarios didn't want to have anything to do with EOKA B because they were Communists but Makarios didn't give up on the idea of ENOSIS neither has the majority of Greek Cypriots to this day. If there was a chance the Greek Cypriot's would jump at it like a shot.
You lot of course have been hiding these facts from the world and tired to make them believe that the war started in 1974 when Turkey after 11 years at last intervened and brought peace to the island. You succeeded for a while to make the world believe that Turkey "attacked" an "innocent" and "helpless" "Republic of Cyprus"...LOL innocent and helpless ... but not any more, they are waking up to your lies and of course you don't like this one little bit and will do anything in your power to try and stop it.
Well boys, keep on trying and power to your chins and fingers, but be sure that I am not the only one who is telling the world what really happened and why the war started and that it started in 1963 and not in 1974. |

Yes, Makarios did give the order to exterminate all Turkish Cypriot in the name of ENOSIS.
No, the Turkish Cypriots was forced out of office and made to look like they walked out, just like it was planned in the Akritas plan.

The Greek Cypriot's started to kill Turkish Cypriots in the name of ENOSIS, did yu expect the Turksih Cypriots to lie down and be killed without putting up a fight to defend themselves and their families? They killed those who tried to kill them, are you for real?
Yeah sure, the Turkish Cypriot's had nothing to worry about but moved into 3% of island just for the sake of it.

Greece and Greek Cypriots had no right to start the ethnical cleansing of Turkish Cypriots in the name of EOKA. The intervention of Turkey was in response to what the Greek Cypriot's did in the first place.

If Turkey hadn't intervened there woould be not Turkish Cypriot's in Cyprus now. They would all have been dead or forced out of Cyprus one wat or another. At least we are not as greedy as the Greek Cypriot's and only took one third of the island. And ever since then there has been no murdering of the innocent from both sides.

Cheap are the Greek Cypriot sites who tell nothing but lies and try to hide the fact that it was the Greek Cypriot's who started the war in Cyprus in 1963 and in the name ENOSIS.
WHy did you lie about the article in the first place and tried to make it look as if the whole thing was manipulated by ATAA to make it look like it came from the BHoC? |

eric, you have serrious problems with the Republic of Cyprus...so why are you talking it out on its citizens, or other cyrpiots, who you beleive represent the Republic of Cyprus? Just cos a state did something, does that mean the citizens of that country should be blamed for it?
should all americans be blamed for the war in iraq, when it was their leaders who decided togo? should we blame a whole group of citizens, for the actions of a minority militia?
Maybe it is the fault of turkey for not makeing their reasons for intervening in cyprus, the reason why they are seen as occupiers....have you never thought that? do you think it is the lies of the Republic of Cyprus? or sorry, no you mean the lies of the citizens who have influenced world leaders! Yes yes, the citizens must be responsible for EVERYTHING a state does .
Eric, you serve no purpose here... this forum is for people who support unification and/or reconciliation between the communities in cyprus...you do not want to do this...GO AWAY. |

Do you think for one moment any right-minded Cypriot would want to give up his/her country's status as a voting member of the EU (including veto rights) and its seat at the UN in order to become another 'Greek island' backwater? With the same influence on European and international affairs as, say, Crete? Or Rhodes?

Don't assess other people's motivations according to your warped world view.

Yes and the second world war started in 1939 and ended in 1945 and now Germany and most of the territories she invaded are happily joined together in the EU. And Turkey's banging on the door too.
This is 2006. The world's moved on Eric. Why don't you do us all a favour and do the same? |

Maybe it is the fault of turkey for not makeing their reasons for intervening in cyprus, the reason why they are seen as occupiers....have you never thought that? do you think it is the lies of the Republic of Cyprus? or sorry, no you mean the lies of the citizens who have influenced world leaders! Yes yes, the citizens must be responsible for EVERYTHING a state does .
Eric, you serve no purpose here... this forum is for people who support unification and/or reconciliation between the communities in cyprus...you do not want to do this...GO AWAY. |
Dhavlos, if you think that I am going to go away and let the citizens of the so-called "Republic of Cyprus" who tried to kill me, my family and my fellow Turkish Cypriots in the name of ENOSIS spread lies in this forum than you got another think coming to you.
I am here for the exact same as you Dhavlos, nothing else.
This forum is called "talkcyprus", where does it say that only those who support unification are welcomed and all others can piss off and stay out?
As I see it, this forum is a discussion forum to try and find a solution and as I have said before Partition is also a solution.
Anyway, I am not the only one who supports partition in this forum so why are you only telling me to go away?
Are you Admin Dhavlos, do you think you have the right to tell me to go away?
What are you going to do if I don't go away, threaten to "eliminate" me, or kick my head in? |
