It is hard to determine how to feel about this. I'm talking about the events on 11 September 2001, the "terrorist" attacks upon WTC twin towers in the New York City.

Look at what a Chilean friend had to say about the remembering of this day under the title "Never going to forget" in another fellows blog [sic]:

"Never going to forget..A day like today USA attack and kill the Brave President Salvador Allende and his people in Chile, 1973, and support the Dictatorial goverment of Pinochet, who kill, disappear and torture, a thounsand of people, men, women, and kids…. even now, we can’t know exactly who many people die in all those years of Pichonet’s goverment, and all this support by USA. All, because he : Salvador Allende, wants a Socialist country, a peaceful country, a more just society...Thanks USA….. we’ll NEVER FORGET"

The thing is, there is almost no country on this planet where a similar comparison can NOT be raised. What about that?

There are countless conspiracy theories that are continuously produced and who knows, may be some are the actual truth. But there is another truth, an undeniable truth, which is that almost every day or week, at least number of people who lost their lives in the WTC die in certain places of Africa, Asia and especially the Middle East in total.

What's the essential difference between the Americans and the poor people outside the US loosing their lives because of US policies? How do people measure this, so that they find it a necessity to remember those Americans who lost their lives and say absolutely nothing about the rest? How is it that, the event in which a (relatively small) number of innocent Americans is killed is so much more important than the killing of hundreds and thousands times many more people from other races, religions and regions? What kind of a double standard is this that so many people are falling for it?

It is without any doubt that I feel truly sorry for the innocent people who lost their lives at the WTC on the 11th and their families too. But this doesn't mean that the above question still stands about.

Thanks Moonskin, I couldn't put it together any better.

I remember when 9/11 was on so many stupid things were said in the media about the attacks such as "the world will never be the same again!!!" but it was, is and will be for long time like this where crimes against humanity were, are and will be happening.

I guess the difference with 9/11 is that it had a really good marketing campaign, prepairing the world for the so called war against terror

Exactly. And this is one of the main reasons for the many conspiracy theories. But I won't go into that now.

The second difference is that it was the first time that an attack from outside took place on US soil. More or less all other countries had this experience at some point in their history.

I remember it well...My father had died on 9th of September and I was grieving, lying in bed watching it on TV...I saw the second plane hit live on air...It was rather surreal...I don't believe anything will ever change in this world...The mighty will keep doing whatever they want and sod any international laws or morality...And the weak will try to get their own back like this....I am disgusted by what is happening now in Gaza...But it illustrates my point...Nothing can stop those with overwhelming power...Not world opinion, not morality, not considerations for human rights...Mostly I am ashamed of being a human being...
