"Mugabe will lose. It's just a formality to go and campaign, the people have already decided."

-- Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, whose Movement for Democratic Change say he beat President Robert Mugabe outright, predicting the outcome of a run-off election officials are looking to hold on June 27. Tsvangirai said Zimbabwe "is effectively being run by a military junta." Some 66 opposition supporters have been killed in political violence since March's disputed presidential election and 200 more were unaccounted for, Tsvangirai said. Tsvangirai said a total of 3,000 MDC supporters had required hospital treatment through state-sponsored violence, with 25,000 displaced. The New York-based organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) said June 9 that free elections were not possible because of the Zanu-PF-organized violence.

The men who pulled up in three white pickup trucks were looking for PatsonChipiro, head of the Zimbabwean opposition party in Mhondoro district. Hiswife, Dadirai, told them he was in Harare but would be back later in theday, and the men departed.

An hour later they were back. They grabbed Mrs Chipiro and chopped off one ofher hands and both her feet. Then they threw her into her hut, locked thedoor and threw a petrol bomb through the window.

The killing last Friday – one of the most grotesque atrocities committed byRobert Mugabe’s regime since independence in 1980 – was carried out on awave of worsening brutality before the run-off presidential elections injust over two weeks.
