Quote: Among the approximately 400 TCy voters who will exercise their voting right at the coming presidential elections, Murat Kanatli constitutes a special case. He is the first TCy political party leader who will vote at the presidential elections of the Republic of Cyprus since 1963.
Quote: M.K.: If we don’t solve the problem in the next few years I don’t see any future for the TCy. In the northern part we are certain now that the population is reaching 500,000. We have recently started to investigate the matter as a party. We have taken the initiative to prepare a relevant document for this. With these facts it is proven that the TCy are a minority in the north and thus we don’t have a voice. Under these circumstances, some have chosen to live in the south. There is the choice for TCy to either live under the laws of the Republic of Cyprus or to emigrate. As long as the present situation with the division continues, the pressure on the TCy will increase and who knows… there might be a moment when they have to seek their luck in the south. But again, the future will be uncertain.
Quote: M.K.: During the past few months we started to deal with this issue, after our research showed the number of 500,000 people. There are people who refuse to believe it; their mind can not accept it. So, we have taken the initiative to prepare a text in English, Greek and Turkish which will be disseminated in the European Union. This will be based on statements of Mehmet Ali Talat, the trade unions and our calculations.
Quote: In this text we will demand the annulment of all the so-called citizenships and the safeguarding only of the TCy, those that have the right to live in Cyprus according to the ’60 constitution. We firstly aim to stop the coming of new settlers and then to send some back, bearing in mind the human rights of course. We are at the stage of shaping it and then and then we will disseminate it to organisations inside and outside Cyprus.

I don't believe that either Mete, but again I don't think that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus census sais the truth either.
As for Murat, he is a cool guy, he is also active with environmental issues in Cyprus and he has a Greek Cypriot girlfriend.
psI thought there were more than 400 Turkish Cypriots voting for the Republic of Cyprus elections. |
