Yesterday it was the anniversery of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Like yesterday on the 15th of November 1983 the Turkish regime of Rauf Denctash self declared the independence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Yesterday the North was celebrating while the South was demonstrating and the highly divided public opinion about the Cyprus problem was still evident.

I will start with the demonstrations...students all over Cyprus went in the streets to protest for the violation of their human rights and the racist separatism along ethnic lines that exists in Cyprus. However there were two obvious groups carrying different ideologies. One group was carrying Cypriot flags and the other group carrying Greek flags. The one group was chanting Cyprus is Greek, the other group Cyprus belongs to its people. It was ridiculous really to see two groups fighting at the time they are much the same. Greek Nationalists Vs the new wave of Cypriot Nationalism. They both used similar slogans against the other group and they both disrespected the other groups opinion and identity. The absence of peace culture was really evident.

As for the North...what can I say. At least the masses didn't attend the celebrations. To celebrate the day that the other group cries, what a fascist celebration. Can you imagine Greek Cypriots celebrating the events of 1963 or the massacres of 1967? Sener Levent told me "only when we celebrate and cry together we will see progress".

Ate, i hope a day like yesterday will be one of the last

Kind of different take here

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.php?id=35943&cat_id=1

Quote: COLLEGE and secondary-school students took to the streets yesterday to protest on the 24th anniversary of the creation of the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state in the north.

While some 200 marched from Makarios Avenue to Eleftheria Square carrying equal numbers of Greek and Cypriot flags, a smaller group of around 100 nationalists headed for the Ledra Palace, where some minor scuffles occurred with police.

The students didn’t harass anyone crossing through the Ledra Palace, but shouted well-known slogans about ‘dead’ Turkish soldiers.

The same smaller group marched down to the end of Ledra Street just before 1pm, carrying nationalistic and Greek flags only. The group, accompanied by motorcycle police, continued chanting nationalistic slogans, while their counterparts in Eleftheria Square took part in a cultural programme.

This report talks of a few hundred student demonstrators in two groups one with mixed Greek and Republic of Cyprus flags and others with just Greek flags. No report of a group with only Republic of Cyprus flags.

AKEL had a gathering with only Republic of Cyprus and red (socialist) flags in the evening..., from what I saw on TV.

No, from TV it is quite evident that there were two groups one holding only greek flags and the other only Cyprus flags. That is both in Lefkosia and Lemesos.

Yes we show our great donkey culture for once more and the Darwin mistakes of Cyprus were not able even to protest against the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the only thing they did from this bullshits were to justify the division and the existence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. They are so pathetic the right wingers, I truly feel sorry for them. They must all gather in a place and burn them self’s for the sake of human evolution.
