Nobody is brainwashed in Cyprus but both sides have fears and both sides have little sympathy for the other side and nobody seems to care about solving the root of the problem, i.e. mistrust. That's why we have the Cyprus problem, not the Turkish army, or the evil imperial powers, or anything else.

Seriously, I don't think Makarios was "inviting them in"; we, as a people were betrayed by the government of Greece, and Turkey's betrayal is no worse, but it is still up to us, the island dwellers, Cypriots, to find a way to live together and to have free will.
