This program called 'contravirus' has somehow downloaded on my PC, it is malware, when i uninstall it from add/remove programs it puts a red X in my task bar in the right hand corner and keeps telling me i have a virus so i will buy its main program.
Even when i ignore that everytime i switch my PC on it immediately downloads the entire contravirus program even though through McAfee i tell it not to allow it and then i remove it again and in the taskbar appears that red X with the warnings.

After a google search there is a lot of people with this problem and everything i have tried i cannot get rid of it even though many claim to be able to with various programs.

If you feel comfortable with non-tactical nukes, I have found HijackThis! very useful. But as the creator warns, don't try it out without the lights on, you might end up damaging some real stuff.

I came across this while looking for a cure to this contra virus but i really don't have the ability to follow without making a mess on a manual removal, i want to try the one erol recommends on the automatic removal just worried about it also putting in something undesirable, all opinions received greatfully as this contravirus is doing my head in. :(

I can say the MANUAL removal is safe. I can not guarantee that any automatic removal tool will not damage your system, intentionaly or by mistake, thats why I recommend the manual appraoch. Also with the manual approach you can see the results of each step and if there is a problem you have more idea where the problem lies and thus how u might get round it.

The instructions for the manual removasl are pretty good , use the links for 'more info on how to do x' for each part. If you have any probs or are not sure of anything ask here.

Hmmmmm...im a bit worried about doing the manual one and screwing up my new PC erol, thinking of taking the risk and going for the automatic removal.

Well in my view you have less chance of damaging your pc with the manual remove. As long as you follow the instructions and only remove / delete / unregister what they say to you will not damage your pc. Also if you set a system restore point before trying then if you do mess things up you can go back to that point.

I really can not say to be honest. It looks legit but weather it can safely remove this malware from your PC I can not say, short of infecting mine and trying it, which I am kind of reluctant to do tbh :)

I found this on a forum from a very happy person, what do you think Erol?? Im tempted to use this in a while as a manual removal.

Alright getting rid of contravirus is a walk in the park, when contravirus is download to your computer or in contact with your computer even if uninstalled there is a red x at the bottom right that blinks. Contravirus reinstalls itself through a program that Contravirus made that is totally different than what Contravirus meaning that if you delete or uninstall Contravirus that program it made is a gateway for it to get back on your computer, luckily I have found that gateway.

Now go to "start" at the bottom right and go to "search", click on "All files and folders" at the left, at the top box put in "xpuupdate" and make sure the 3 box is " Local Hard Drives (C:;D:),xpuupdate is the program that Contravirus created to get into your computer, let your computer sit for about 30 seconds till its done searching the files, it should come up with 2 results with xuupdate, only 1 can be deleted. Delete the one you can delete and once youve done that go to the recycle bin and delete it. The second result pull it out on to your background of your computer, then close out your windows or programs your running, press ctrl + alt + delete and a window will pop up showing running programs, switch the panel at the top from "Applications" to "Processes" and click on "Image Name" which will put the names in alphabetical order, go to the "X's" and find xpuupdate, then end the program, once done that check in the recycle bin in case it might be there if it is delete it. The red X should stop blinking at the bottom right of your screen and Contravirus should no longer be able to get through.

From a quick glance it looks like this may work, though the original link I gave has much more complete instructions, which remove all the 'detrius' left by this malware. The above instructions will probably stop the thing from running but there will still be stuff left on the pc that is not wanted , like registry entries and dlls etc.

Thanks Erol, i really do need something easy to go with as im not at all computer savvy, i know general stuff but this is way out of my league, i think i will do the above process and then system restore to 6 months ago and that should clear all the registry entries and dllls i hope...what do you think of the plan. :?

Well the plan did not work as this apparently newer variant was able to come back at every re-boot, the manual extract also did not work yet again because this was apparently a newer variant which is able to hide and avoid extraction but being the careful person i am i keep a back up of everything i have so i formatted my PC and deleted everything, problem solved :lol: and then re-installed everything i wanted again and i now use 'kaparsky' instead of McAfee and voila problem solved.
